no i think the first character you pick is the one you save from falling down after you defeat the human-reaper and the last one you pick is the one who saves you from falling down, could be wrong but thats what i experienced during my playthroughs

i think is kinda random... or better it could be that too but sometimes when he loads a scene he switch characters making it becoming quite random... on my first pt i saved Tali from the fall and at the ship she saved me

(last time i ended up saving legion.... ewwwww its not always the lucky day )

i actually think its your LI that helps you up because i always bring tali with me and she helps me up every time. also your LI will speak there mind and disagree with TIM right before you have to make your decision. it just seems weird couse sometimes its tali that almost falls and other times its garrus or thane.
