They could have always put another turian in there instead of Garrus.  Just like Grunt and Wrex.  The reason they didn't was because there was no reason to.  They had every reason to bring Garrus back.

I still think Tali was always coming back, and the flotilla was the most logical destination for furthering her story.  Fan service doesn't seem like part of it to me.  Its just the most convincing and gripping story they could come up with.

So the only fanservice was the inclusion of romance for Tali and Garrus? Still doesn't make sense because Tali as a nonromanceable in ME2 would be WEIRD, I mean why is she always with you? :P

Well, they're trying to sell games and  their vision of the game is probably malleable to a certain extent based on that.  If something isn't working, they'd have to fix it.  It turned out to work better than they thought, it what I'm saying.  I'd also  like to note that you don't even have to recruit the only turian  squaddie in ME1, I think.

I doubt the Flotilla trip was created  solely for fanservice.  It seems clear that the quarian/geth thing is  one of ME's big subplots.  I think they had an outline of the idea, but  it grew into what we see now based on the response to the  character.

I mean the Flotilla trip was probably planned, but centered around Tali? The more we talk about this the more  brilliant Bioware looks.

I'm just confused on "to what extent  they gave in to fanservice", cuz people saying Tali wouldn't even be  here if we weren't harping on Bioware about it kinda urks me.

It could've been a cameo role like Liara's instead.

Not necessarily, Tali isn't integral to the plot of ME2.  You can skip recruiting her altogether.  I don't think you have any problem with her role in ME2.[smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/love.png[/smilie]  They could do it just as well in ME3.

I do share your fear of a reduced focus as well.  Its the reason that I don't expect ME3 to be as loved as ME2. Everyone loves something different in ME2, and there's a good chance that ME3 won't focus on that part as much. For me, its the characters, and I'm almost certain they'll take a backseat in ME3.  I'm just holding out hope that they go all out on the romance arc.

QFT

Just look at all the "support threads" and BW will probably introduce more recruitable characters. Some people are bound to be disappointed with the choice of characters in ME3 (can't have 'em all I suppose). I just hope it won't be us Talimancers. Personally I don't  care whether the rest of the cast has a central role, a cameo or disappears totally as long as Tali is recruitable.

"Tali isn't integral to the plot of ME2"

This isn't right and i hope BioWare inflicts some heavy penalties in ME3 for people who let her die or didn't even recurit her, after all this is supposed to be a game where your choices matters and not recruiting someone with Tali's skills, knowledge and influence (Entire Flotilla) should really change the course of the game. (i.e Joker saving the Normandy, no IFF, no suicide mission)

So the final part of the trilogy is coming, and i certainly hope you reap the benefits (or disadvantages) of the choices you made.

One would say, "Oh so i got Tali killed (or exiled?), but im Shepard and i will Paragon/Regenade the Quarians to aid me against the Reapers" Yeah right, you saved the universe from Sovereign and couldn't convince the Council/Udina to help you against the Collectors, so no Tali, no Flotilla support, higher chance of defeat in the final battle. (Like Normady upgrades)

Like this guy who killed all his crew (Including Shepard himself) and wanted to play Joker in ME3, because it seemed "More real" (In a game completely identical to real life), More real? More like your leadership sucked and got your entire team killed, i expect a big "You did it wrong" message in ME3 in situations like that.

But enough of my rant, hope you caught point. =/

I look at it like the ME2 squad going into ME3.  They could justify writing her out if they had wanted too then, but what was their motivation to do so?  Tali and Garrus are the only real link to ME1 in ME2.  They would have had to come up with a believable quarian squad mate to continue the geth/quarian conflict, and they would have still had to give Tali a cameo role.  Isn't that a huge mess?  A lot easier to just bring back Tali and continue developing that character, make the ME1 crowd happy, and move on.

If not Tali, maybe we would've got Liara instead.  There's some evidence that a larger role for her was originally planned.

I don't think there was much fan service at all to be honest.  I think Bioware stayed largely true to their plan from the beginning, and we just happened to love their initial plan.  Everything they did, you could logically expect them to do from the start.  I don't think they were scrambling to change everything after ME1.  Tali and Garrus would always make great emotional romances.

Unfortunately, jerks rarely get their comeuppance in such a manner.  Since the game is supposed to be designed to let just about anyone have fun.

I caught your point, and I agree with you, I just don't see it being what happens.  ME3 will be a stand alone game, your choices in ME2 are not going to affect the plot in ME3.  Be prepared for that charm/intimidate option to bring the quarians along (although I think it will be reclaiming their homeworld, not dialogue.)

Tali isn't integral to the plot in ME2.  You can complete the game without her, that's about all there is to it.  You miss out on a lot of content, and I'm sure that you would miss out on a lot of content for each character that you don't have for ME3, but that doesn't mean the game will hinge on having them all.
