Glass is actually a very hard substance; it is however also brittle. Very few things can effectively cut glass (diamonds being one of the exceptions). Bludgeoning tools do an excellent job at shattering/breaking glass however.
Therefore glass would not be a viable material to use.
There is no such things as "100% risk free" in life.

A mass effect propelled slug would tear through just about any item of clothing/armor in the ME universe without kinetic shields to absorb the impact. This remains true irrespective of whether the item is made of glass or kevlar.

Hmm.... well, it looks glossier, so that's good. I think it would be better without an actual reflection though--just have the the "lights" reflecting on her mask in a more glossy way. In-game you never see any reflections on her mask, just generic lights.
Also, the image being reflected contrasts with the black background.
While I'm at it... in-game Shepard's eyes are actually a very deep blue. In this image they're kind of like a slate-blue.
Just a couple minors things--it looks great regardless.

I will have to disagree with this statement due to the face that glass is used to test the... bah I cant remember the term we used in geology, but it was used and youd cut the surface of the glass with the material to try and find out what it as based on a scale of how easy it was to cut the glass... Hardness, that's it.
It shatters.
Many materials are better.
Like I said earlier some sort of polymer tephlon would probably be the material used, or the version of it they had on the Quarians worlds... It is what we use for jets at the moment and can take a massive beating(go look up the duck episode of mythbusters)

You just confirmed what I stated previously. Glass is a very hard substance which may explain why it is used to test another items sharpness factor. That glass is hard does not necessarily make it strong nor flexible, hence the comment about it being brittle.

It is used because it is a medium between the harder and softer objects, on the "Hardness" scale in geology it is only rated a 5 out of 10.

Tali's visor doesn't show reflections because it's far easier to use a cubemap to simulate reflectivity than to have realtime reflections. Maybe I should tone it down a bit though.
Secondly, I thought I got Shepard's eyes dead on from my reference shot

Shepard's eyes change color throughout the game depending on the lighting. In ME1 whenever you talk to Hackett on the galaxy map his eyes look that slate-blue. Then at certain side angles they actually look brown

Yeah, I figure her mask's reflection (or lack of one) is just a technical limitation. But without a background, any kind of reflection beyond a few blobs of light to show off the mask's glassy material makes your brain get slightly confused.

Though the romances in BG2 were buggy as hell. I had to mess with the scripts to get out of a glitch.
