That really makes no sense. Building a giant robot to sit inside a giant space fighter? It would have to be in the fetal position to even fit in one of the designs.

Heh, if one of them did that much damage, and then we see this at the end of me2 and it shows...what?... hundreds, thousands?...Do even all the fleets combined have firepower to destroy that many of them?

Think of it less like a machine and more like a human embryo. It eventually builds into a whole new shape altogether.

I can see no logic in building one design then encasing it in another. More logical would be to build one design that has all needed ability into it from the start.

The humanoid reaper could have been an evolutionary choice of the reapers, deciding to 'upgrade' over the old design.

But I am pretty sure the reapers monitor organic comms and they probably find it interesting that a good portion of the galaxy hate or fear the humans. As was stated in ME1 humans grew into power so fast that other more established races were either outright angry and hostile (Batarians) or resigned that a bigger bully has arrived and hoped that the turians would deal with humanity. After the events in ME1, humanity surprisingly cemented its domninace and to the reapers, humanity would be the succeeding 'upgrade' where the proteans failed.
