Just want to throw this out there:

Rael loves his daughter.  This is a given.  However, his way of showing it is to try to strengthen the Flotilla.  To this end, his last message to his daughter is not "stay safe, I love you," but rather "make sure the admirals get this data!"

I posit that Rael has at some point lost sight of how love for someone is supposed to include them, not ignore them for their own good.

I try to keep this in mind when speculating about what he'd do.

Well that's kind of why the whole question is unprovable speculation.  We don't know enough about him.  I don't think he was adverse to showing love in different ways altogether, just that instead of saying that he loved her, he tried to show it by building her a house and all.  Wanting to see her happy is a completely different aspect.  His ways of showing love are misguided, but aren't malicious in intent.  Trying to change her feelings to fit his seems like another step farther.

Its possible that he could think that trying to keep her safe, away from the danger surrounding Shepard's mission, and an interspecies relationship, would be the best way to show that he loved her.  I think that's kind of the main question.  On one hand, we saw into his thought process in his email, he sent, but that was his first impression.  I think his outlook could be softened over time by seeing how Tali acts.

The Cerberus thing doesn't seem like that big of a deal.  Tali is with you the whole time, and can verify that your activities aren't in line with the rest of Cerberus.  If they won't listen to you telling them that, they would have to listen to her.  No one really seems to care during Tali's loyalty mission either, that may be a game limitation, but still.  On top of that, you're not working for them anymore after the collectors are down.

Again, there's a difference between welcoming and accepting.  I think you're right that Rael wouldn't welcome Shepard, but after seeing the two's feelings for each others, and Shep's good intentions, I don't see any way a loving father tries to stop that.

They place a very high value over kinship, that's why quarians stick out for each other more than most other races. the problem is that Shepard is and always will be an outsider to them, he may be lauded for his work agains the geth, but he is still not one of them, that's why I doubt that Rael would really approve.

I don't see how they can value kinship, and then think less of Tali because her true love is someone who isn't a quarian.  That seems like a contradiction to me.  If they truly valued kinship, they would be happy for her regardless.  I still never got a vibe that quarians would disapprove of interspecies relationships though, unless I missed a quote.

Yeah, I've found that Cloaking is good for more than just headshots.  I typically cloak upon entering a room in order to tell my squad where to go before the enemy sees me.  It is kinda annoying that I have to tell them where to go or else they will die, but whatever.

That's part of being a leader. Lead them or they will die.

Yeah, but even grunts have a certain degree of operational freedom.  You don't think that lieutenants or higher tell every grunt exactly what cover to get behind?  They trust the grunts to keep their heads down.  For some reason the most elite team of soldiers don't know what it means to keep your head down.  Climbing onto cover instead of taking cover behind it? Really?

Oh, and ME TOO BRO.

I agree with Azint.  Rael may respect shepard but because he isn't quarian he would see him as an outsider.  Whereas the women of the galaxy would die to be at shepard's arm (or so it seems) the opinion of the galaxy is meaningless to the quarians.  I think the only time he would approve is when I tell them they get their planets back after they sign the peace treaty with the geth.

So I'm the only one that thinks Rael wouldn't mind?  :pinched:

Maybe I'm taking Tali's personality as too much of a representation of the rest of the quarians, but they seem like perfectly accepting people to me.  I see the normal reaction being something like "He's a human?  That's odd.  But look at how much he loves you.  And he's so charming and heroic.  Good for you ;)"

And of course, like you say, I'm still getting their homeworld back on top of the rest of the stuff :wizard:

You may not understand it, but it does happen. You have never heard of a story where a family disapproves of their daughters lover because he is different? I also doubt that interspecies romance is fully supported, or ever would be endorsed, especially by the quarians judging by their values.

The quarians have an Us against Them mentality.  The galaxy considers them second class citizens, thieves even and as such they have to look out for each other above others.  And they are organic, prone to baseless judgments like any other species. You can't expect someone to think as logically about it as you have, that's stupid and setting yourself up for disappointment.  You have to realize that the quarians are imperfect and having a hero fall for a non-quarian is like a betrayal for an emotional mind.  That falls outside their Us against Them mentality.

Tali is generally accepting and sympathetic to others, for a quarian.

And we all want that end where she gets her home.

Just the only one in a three person discussion.  My impressions of Rael's perception of shepard comes from his email that he sent you.  Very threatening and very condescending.  He states that he thinks I used my history with Tali to manipulate her into join me again.  Not very accepting of Tali's decision.

I fully understand that reaction as a first impression.  I just see the continuation of that thought process after all the cards are out on the table as incredibly insensitive and close minded.  I'm not saying that it can't happen, I just see it as unlikely that Rael cares about Tali, yet wouldn't be willing to have an open mind about the relationship.
