But now we have half of this largest fleet in the galaxy not participating in the battle at all.  If the war ships can't defeat the geth army, what good is having the rest retreat?  Travel is very quick in the ME universe.  The geth could hunt down the weak ships and just pick them off without trouble.

They can make it to Citadel space.
A Geth army on the move would be viewed as a threat by nearly all organics.  They'd be pretty much be guaranteed support (even if blamed by some for bringing the Geth out).

We're really getting deep into this game of what-ifs.

Not too deep, a quarian geth war is a possibility (I don't ever see it happening, but its not outlandish.)  The issue then becomes what does the council do?  I don't see how they're guaranteed help.  They would be blamed for bringing the geth out, and the flotilla isn't even allowed in council space IIRC.

At this point we would have an extremely weakened race (maybe beyond the point of recovery if enough people fought,) that everyone hates.  Powerful people all the time do stuff like expelling the quarians knowing that it will result in their death.  There's just no reason to expect the council to change their tune and help them.

The big question here is how Anderson could affect the council's decision, because if Shepard asks him to help the quarians he will do it

I don't know about you, but I don't get the feeling that Anderson can do anything.  The turian seems to be the boss, and the asari relegated their defense duty to the turians on top of that.  The salarians have no reason to support Anderson.  It isn't like he's a good politician either.  I know Anderson's a good guy, I just don't see what he can do.

True, they seem to be ignoring him most of the time, but i also get the feeling that the salarian is also getting ignored sometimes by the two "superior" races, if Anderson (doing it himself or using Udina) could convince him to come on his side things can get pretty interesting

Okay, I figure it's time for Tali to dramatically save Shepard for a change, and I've always liked this concept, so here's a minific. :P

--Old crash site of a quarian cruiser--

Shepard is trapped against some crates, and completely out of thermal clips. Seven armed batarian slavers approach him.

"Wait, I recognize that face... you're that famous human, Shepard! Haha, we're rich boys! We're going to get a fortune for him!" Their leader said.

Suddenly there was a loud explosion sound off to the side; it came from the old crashed quarian cruiser. A massive, 15-foot bipedal tank had smashed through its hull; pieces of metal and debris rained around it as it emerged. It was Tali, inside a Heavy Exo-Suit, that quarian marines once drove into battle before their exile.

"Get away from him, you Bosh'tets!" was heard from the colossal machine.

"What the f*** is that...?" The batarian leader asked, looking in awe.

"My girlfriend..." Shepard responded with a smirk, and kicked the batarian's weapon out of his hand, jumping behind some nearby cover.

The large exo-suit then began to run straight towards them, it's powerful left arm extended outward, swiping inwards as it reached the slavers. Five of them went flying into the air like ragdolls, and the other two immediately followed as Tali followed-up with a backhand.

Bullets began to spray against the exo-suit; there were two YMIR Heavy Mechs nearby, one further away than the other. Tali turned around, and ran straight towards the closest one. Each stomp of the exo-suit's feet made a loud thud, sending dust and debris flying into the air. She tackled the heavy mech, pinned it to the ground, and proceeded to punch downwards at it multiple times, utterly destroying its head.

The heavy mech then began to go into self-destruct mode. Tali grabbed it, lifted into the air--the exo-suit struggled slightly under its weight--and tossed it at the other heavy mech. There was a massive explosion upon collision, completely destroying both of them.

Tali then approached Shepard, got out of the exo-suit, and ran to him. They hugged tightly.

"I knew you wouldn't let me down," Shepard said, smiling at her.
