Expand into red giant, blow off a bunch of mass and leave a planetary nebula+white dwarf star. Wouldn't affect even the next closest system

No. Actually now that I think about it, neither would a supernova. They detect it doing so, and they fly away at FTL.

I still don't think the Reaper fleet is that massive looking, when you're thinking in a galactic perspective.
