I say mix it up.

I like the "the military is in my blood" theme
but thats my Shepard, not yours

The theme is definitely appealing. But I like to think that, after the batarians came, Shepard had a choice. He could return to Mindoir and help rebuild, maybe even start a family. Or he could take the Oath of Service and make sure that what happened to him never had to happen to another child again.

Thats a good one too.
But if you think about it a Spacer Shepard is a human Tali. Living in the fleet in the shadow of his mother Hannah Shepard, a respected alliance officer. Not quite like Rael but still Tali and Shepard would have a lot in common.

And my Shepard gets to introduce Tali to his mother
