Sometimes I wonder what the military role of the Vanguard is. I mean, he's a biotic, so he's a very limited resource. Presumably he's backed up by regular soldiers (using ARs?). But if he charges, he's going to be in their line of fire.

Welcome. Similar case with me. Granted, I've only gone through ME2 twice in total. I have a playthrough as F!Shepard going on right now to romance Garrus, but my main Shepard romanced Tali. I actually tried Miranda's romance too, but I couldn't go through it. Her like of Cerberus is too much of an obstacle, especially since my canon Shepard is a sole survivor.khevan wrote...
Ok, now I know I'm in the right place.
I always start a playthru with a class, and I get through a few missions and quit and restart an Infiltrator.
I also have started various playthrus to bring a Miranda romance into ME3, to see how that plays out...but I just can't bring myself to finish it.

I have one playthru where I stayed loyal to Ash from ME1, to see how that story arc plays out, but every. single. other. playthru has been with Tali.

Like all the other classes, I assume they are to make up for a position in a commando unit. I believe all the classes are intended to have backup to fill in the shortcomings of another class. But the soldier seems to be a self-sustaining unit all on their own.NuclearBuddha wrote...

But are there enough of them to fill such a role? I mean, biotics don't grow on trees.El-Destructo wrote...
Shock troops. They can find a hole in the enemy defenses and exploit it more easily than anyone else. And take a bigger beating because of the way charge refills their barrier.NuclearBuddha wrote...

We can be friends, I think.
Three combat drones makes for some very amusing experiences. A bonus if they are all under the same specialization, and the same target.Pacifien wrote...

I'm really enjoying my soldier playthrough. Use my assault rifle to get rid of shields and then finish them off with my sniper rifle. Good times.

Plus, everyone gets one in cutscenes, anyway.NuclearBuddha wrote...
That's the other thing that's kinda weird. In general the AR is the workhorse of the modern military, and I don't see that changing. But only 1 class can use it.

Designated diversion? Yikes!NCLanceman wrote...
Their specific objective, I think, would be to break heavily defended positions. A Vanguard is very good at tying up a large number of enemies, which could open up gaps for the rest of the Vanguard's unit to exploit - either to slip by the rest of the defenses or to flank units.

I had a similar experience, I picked up the Claymore in my first game. Mind you the Claymore is actually a good weapon, but the Eviscerator trumps it for range and nearing the same DPS. Then enters the Widow...cannedcream wrote...

Vanguard was my first class and the first character I imported to ME2, but now that I've had a sweet, sweet taste of the Widow. . . I can never go back.
Well, the ammo thing is moot, since ME guns all just use blocks of metal. But you bring up a good point: maybe most action takes place at closer range in ME.khevan wrote...

The assault rifle (whatever the flavor, be it the AK-47, the M-16 family, or any of the other lesser known types) are great at "mid-ranged" combat, from about 50-300 meters. This is where most real life combat takes place.
This makes the assault rifle a solid choice for modern militaries, because it simplifies logistics, the bane of any military unit. Beans and bullets, as they say. If everyone uses the same weapon, then everyone uses the same bullets. It's a cost thing, really.
