Tali: Were those things the Geth made?
Mari: *laughs warmly* No, they were animals. Kind of like lizards... they ate juntas- a kind of small land herbivore. They even made silk.
Tali: *indignant* Lizards can't make silk!
Mari: These did. They secreted it from their mouths and built nests out of it. Our ancestors used to harvest their nests and make clothing out of it.

*Mari stretches out the last words of the sentence, further enthralling her child. Sure that she has her full and complete attention, Mari reaches under the bed for a small lockbox.*

Mari: When you leave dragon silk out in the sun on the homeworld, it can turn all sorts of beautiful colors, absorbed from the skies themselves. Blue days, sunny orange, red sunsets... and rarest of them all, only found in the furthest reaches of the homeworld, where the sun doesn't set for months!-
Tali: Months? But... I thought the sun went up and down every twenty or so hours...
Mari: Remind me to teach you a little about planetology when we're done. Anyway, only where twilight lasts for days on end...

*Deftly, without breaking eye-contact with Tali, Mari unlocks the box and pulls out a bolt of deep purple cloth.*

Mari: You get... this color.
Tali: *awed* Whoa...
Mari: Only the strongest and the bravest warriors could get their hands on these types of cloth. Through the mountains, in the coldest caverns, they traveled and fought against dragons that could see in the dark!
*Tali gasps*
Mari: And a long time ago, one of your fathers ancestors did all that... and made this bolt of cloth. Some day soon, this will go on your first envirosuit. What do you think?
Tali: *excited* I love it!  Oh mom!

*Unable to hug, she bounces around excitedly. In the midst of the commotion, her father enters.*

Rael: Hey! What's going on here?
Tali: Momsmakingmysuitoutofpurpledragonsilkohkeelahmyfriendaregonnaloveit-
Rael: *picks up the hyperactive bubble* Hey kid, slow down! Now run that by me again.
Tali: *squee* I'm getting the best envirosuit ever!
Rael: Is that so? Well, I'm glad. I'll bet you're gonna wanna tell all your friends about it.
Tali: *stops, suddenly subdued a little* Yeah, I would...
Rael: Alright, run along now.
Tali: Alright... I guess I'll tell you about it later...

*The bubble rolls out of the cubicle slowly. However, as she catches sight of one of her friends, her mood swings back around to joy. With her gone, Rael turns to his wife.*

Rael: *flat* I suppose you didn't tell her that bolt of cloth came from an asari merchant.
Mari: Not if I didn't have to. *Rael starts to say something, but gets cut off by his wife* Look, it's not going to hurt to tell her a little about the homeworld. If you want to build her a house there one day, it should be something real to her, and something to look forward to... not a pit at the end of an obsticle course. 
Rael: *slumps his shoulders, defeated before he even began. Somehow, with his wife, he couldn't bring himself to be disappointed* Alright... just so long as she remembers the Fleet.
Mari: She's your daughter, Rael. The Fleet will never leave her.

Rannoch, twenty years later.

*Tali sits beside a river, washing her shawl. It's old and battleworn by now, but it still holds a sentimental value for her. Shepard finishes assisting Legion with the readings of the planet to return to the Admiralty Board, and sits behind Tali. The couple sit for a while when she suddenly breaks the silence.*

Tali: My mother used to tell a story about this shawl. She said it was made of dragon silk harvested from brave knights. I never once asked how exactly she'd gotten it on the Flotilla, but that didn't matter. It mattered to her that it mattered to me. That made it precious.

*Tali pokes a finger through a bullet hole in her shawl.*

Tali: It's a shame it doesn't keep in our line of work.

*The two sit in silence as she morns the damage to her heirloom. This time Shepard breaks the silence.*

Shepard: Are there actual dragons on this world?
Tali: There are big lizards here, certainly. A bit like... what were they called... Komodo Dragons. Ours are known for their deadly poison.
Shepard: And do they make silk?
Tali: They do... just like mother said.
Shepard: *puts a hand on her shoulder* Then you've got a knight perfectly willing to get you another.
Tali: *turns slowly to Shepard, speaking playfully* Are you sure? I've heard you've got to cross some dangerous mountains and icy caverns...
Shepard: I'd do it in a heartbeat.

*No words were needed. She knew he meant it, just like he meant every promise he ever made to her. She throws her arms around her and holds him tight.*
