Tali mentions in ME1 that her mother's death seemed to hit Rael particularly hard.

Kinda makes you wonder; had she not died, would Rael have done all craziness with the geth? It almost seems like her death, as a result of the harsh realities of life on the flotilla, pushed him to an extreme "Get the homeworld back at all costs" mentality.
