Well. We have a basic outline of the story. We know which chapters are going to be about what. We start a new chapter, Jones writes it. Every once in a while he sends updates, and we discuss the plot, dialogue, things to change, that thing. When he's done, he sends it to me. I go back and add things or change things to my liking, adding up to or over a page of stuff. I make corrections and the such as well. I give it back to Jones, who goes over it a final time, then we post.
For three, Jones wrote about eight pages worth, I did a little over two. We were going to do a time skip at some point, but Jones felt uncomfortable with it, so I took over for a bit. We ended up holding it off until chapter four, but we're keeping what I added anyway, provided he likes it.
As for plot and character development, we have a string of messages that would EASILY take up over a hundred pages of Word discussing it. We just bounce ideas off eachother until we get what we want. He's a very agreeable guy.
You sound like a light OP (outline person). I am approaching "Smile" differently. I'm in the middle between an OP/NOP (no outline person). That is, I have my little "plot islands", or scene ideas. But I don't know if they'll stay in. Right now I'm just writing from Tali'Zorah's viewpoint, trying to stay in character, trying to keep everyone else in character, letting the story take it where I may. (To those who want to attempt this, make sure you know your characters well first. I'm taking a risk by not doing as much homework on them as I could.)
But this doesn't mean I don't plan. I let me mind wander on possible scene ideas at certain junctures and I run with the one I like. And I go from there. In a way, this first draft is basically a big, random outline. Some parts will stay, some won't. I'm writing scenes that come to mind and scenes I dwell on when I'm doing other stuff. I write this because I am extremely interested in letting the storyline flow from the characters and how they react. I'm trying not to pin as many external factors on them as possible. Once the draft is done, I'll go in and organize the mess into something coherent.
Neither way, OP or NOP, is the definite way to go.. Gotta choose your own style, I believe.

Implies you let Samara die. Unless you're a badass biotic mofo and you clobber her in her apartment even before Samara gets there.
