You know what's the most annoying part? They believed that the Reapers exists at the end of ME1 if they were not killed during the battle.

That's why I hate them.

Who wants to cause a scene preparing for an apocolyptic fight?  much easier to preserve the status quo until everyone's dead :?

I recall this plothole.  I SAVED those guys, they saw what happened, and now it doesn't work?  What a rip.

I didn't think it was plothole, I thought the council knows of the reaper threat, yet is more interested in the status quo.  I haven't seen this dialogue in a while though.

Whereas humanity has basically handed over their sovereignty  to an unelected alien governing body. Kind of like the EU actually.

Cuts both ways.  If humanity joins the current Council, they get to have a say in how the aliens live their lives.

Then again, I think the Council's dictates are probably not too bad.  No slavery, some trade issues, rules for common defense and conflict resolution, etc.  They're too lazy to go interfering too much, let alone enforcing that interference, which is the real issue.

I don't think the Council is bad. They are simply traditionalists and stubborn. I don't like what they did with the Quarians of course, but the Quarians already knew that AI was illegal. I imagine that the Council made an example of the Quarians.

I suspect that the Quarians were too prominent for the Council's liking, and when the opportunity arose to completely disenfranchise them they eagerly took it.

Yeah, letting a species get pushed to the brink of extinction really was necessary there.

But here's the thing. The geth only achieves AI status when they are gathered in a large number. Alone they're nothing more than VIs.

And the transformation was subtle. When the quarians discovered what they'd done, it was too late.

How about the humans make their own Council with the Quarians and Krogan.

Bad idea, especially the latter part.

That's just negligence. They didn't actively try to make the Quarians extinct.

I agree. But I don't know how the Quarians could prove to the Council that the geth developed sapience on their own.

The quarians, if they had anything to offer humanity (they don't, other than sexy, sexy hips) would be natural allies: both are outsiders looking in.

But the krogan? Forget that noise.

It's not exactly the first time the Council just watched as a race almost became extinct, either.

I don't think there is evidence of the Council disliking Quarians before the Morning War. I doubt the Quarians were in much of a place to threaten the Council given their immune systems. They can't exactly be expansive when they die being on most worlds that other races can live on fine. They probably stuck to their little slice of the galaxy, and stayed there.

Ekuna wasn't completely hospitable to the Quarians. The gravity there could prove costly to their health.

I don't see the treatment of the quarians by the council as a punishment at all.  The way I see it, it must have been getting tougher and tougher treating a galaxy wide race of billions like a second class race.  The quarians had to be pushing for a seat, but that would upset the status quo.

All of a sudden, a perfect opportunity to get rid of them and add a scapegoat for future events pops up.  Too easy for the council.  They can use AI being illegal as a justification if they want, and I'm sure they would, but no way the aari get that treatment.

No way.  There's no evidence of that.  If the quarians were so prominent, they'd have been on the Council.  They showed up almost as early as everyone else.

I think the quarians were relatively small-time:  they probably colonized very slowly due to the health issues, and their trade probably wasn't as important because at the time they were the only dextro-race.

Regardless, they made a conscious decision to allow genocide to occur.

Which makes me think it wasn't about upholding the law.

I think the Quarian Empire, or whatever it might have actually been called, was a much bigger player in the galaxy before the Morning Wars. Consider the fact they they were a spacefaring race the longest and created space stations that could be compared to the Citadel in size.

The three big players were the Council, the Terminus Systems, and the Quarian Empire.

The Council turns their backs on the quarians, in the interest of removing one more factor in enforcing their own laws.
