Do they explain how Earthborn's parents died? That's the only reason I like Colonist, it has more detail.And you can't deny that Colonist and Earthborn have it equally rough (maybe moreso with Colonist).

Shepard could have avoided gangs on Earth, but Colonist couldn't control what happened on Mindoir.

There's no background on what happened with Shepard's parents. For all we know they're still alive.

I personally like that it's ambiguous, it lets me imagine whatever I want to imagine. Maybe his parents were killed, or maybe his mother was a vagrant who was raped by someone and gave birth to him 9 months later; there's really no end to the possibilities. 

I've always been partial to the Spacer Background for the very reason that we Know Shep's Mother, Hannah, is alive and is a Fleet Captain. I've always had this idea for a great FF where Shepard takes Tali on Leave to meet his mother, she adores Tali and than Tali learns that years ago Shep's mother acutally met Rael when the Quarian fleet came near Alliance Space and she respected him and so on. Wish I had Budda's or your skill to write it...
