No gonna lie, I thought you were going to link here.

That's also an adequate substitute.

Meh.

Military service isn't my flavor.

*Insert Mordin's comment about chest-bumping.*

I'm a lover, not a fighter.

I believe you mean to say 'wuss-bag'. ;)

Don't worry; me too.

If nothing else, Call of Duty has taught me that I need to to stay far, FAAAAR away from anything deadlier than a spoon.

I'm aiming not to **** up.

don't. it will ruin your life.

It didn't ruin my great grandfather's life, nor my grandfather's, nor my father's.

Don't try to lecture me on this.

f*cking up, or joining the military? because i was referring to the former. thats what i'm best at, the latter is good and honorable. no criticisms to anyone who pulls that off.

Azint wrote...

The station was far away now, they left all the ships and bodies as they were. They even left Pallin’s corpse in the freighter. The Normandy had already extracted them from the Kodiak just outside the now dead facility, Shepard, Tali, and Garrus have already returned to their ablative home. No one bothered to look back when the station exploded, it did not make a sound in space. When the three stepped off the the shuttle, the crew immediately noticed a missing body, but no one had dared to speak up about it.

The three of them had already deposited their gear back at the armory when EDI notified Shepard about the mission report. Shepard waved the AI off telling it that the Executor can wait for his report. Garrus returned to his station on Deck 3, Tali decided to work again in Deck 4. Shepard sat alone in his cabin, he was disquieted at what had happened. Tali simply worked to try and distract herself.

Shepard thought again at what happened, he pushed the notion away during the mission but that was natural for him. There was no longer an objective to focus on, he could not get the thoughts out of his head, Tali is a danger to his mission capabilities. He would never let anything hinder his progress, but then that happened. He was scared, he is supposed to be an instrument of order and direct force, Shepard had disciplined himself to do whatever it takes to see a mission through and he always would.

Tali threatened that.

This was unfamiliar to him. He was confident that Tali would serve him, he was her Captain and Commander and they both cared for each other. Shepard did not think about how she contributed to a mission, he was busy at the notion that she may get into danger again. Tali was the only thing he cared for personally, she was his one and only emotional attachment, she was the only thing left that made him feel human at all. Remorseless, cold, brutal, the only semblance to a person left in him was his love. What is there to do? What happens if she dies? What happens if she ruins a mission?

Shepard cursed Pallin for getting so close. He cursed himself for caring. He cursed Tali for being there.

Shepard paced in the briefing room. He was angry, and Garrus knew it. The turian vigilante knew better than to ask about it. When Shepard had a problem, he handled it alone.

"Have you ever loved anyone?" Shepard asked flatly.

That was unexpected. Garrus tilted his head to the side curiously, unsure of how to answer. Shepard turned to look at him from across the wooden slab in the center of the room. Garrus' gaze turned downward before looking at Shepard, his voice cool.

"I don't think so." It was the truth.

Shepard somehow managed to look even more agitated.

"What about that woman you told me about, the one from your time with the fleet?"

"No. You know how it is. Tensions get high, you find a way to get it out or you go crazy." Garrus' held his mandible's close to his jaw, all mirth and joy gone from his voice. He knew what this was about.

"Did she die?" Shepard's voice somehow remained even. It was almost cold.

"No." It was a simple answer. Simple was always a good way to go. Shepard continued to stare into Garrus. It always unnerved him. It would unnerve anyone, staring into the devil's face, only to have hell stare at you back.

"Turians mate for life." Shepard had obviously done some research.

"Not always." Truth of the matter was, Garrus had never been very close to anyone outside of his team on Omega and Shepard. Even then, he wasn't sure "love" would be the proper word to describe it.

Shepard and Garrus stood across from the table, silence overtaking them. It was awkward to say the least.

"Do you love her?" Garrus asked. Direct line of sight. Best to take the shot and get it over with. Shepard had taught him that.

Shepard looked up at him, "I don't want her to die."

Headshot.

"Then don't let her." Simple advice. The best kind.

After a moment, Shepard nodded slowly. Blinking at Garrus, he asked a final question, "What if she jeopardizes the mission?"

Garrus found the irony staggering. This was normally the kind of question he would ask Shepard, not the other way around.

"I didn't think you cared that much about anything, Shepard." Garrus wasn't trying to be rude, but the blunt approach was often the best to take with Shepard. Mind games and psychological tricks just pissed him off.

Shepard bowed his head, seemingly defeated.

"I dont' think I do either." Garrus knew it to leave it alone from here. Shepard would figure it out on his own. He always did.

"EDI, are your done yet?" Garrus asked the A.I. She had likely finished a while ago, waiting for the broken spectre and his heavily armored partner to finish what could pass as thier version of a "heart to heart".

"Decryption complete. All files pertaining to the missing quarians, Hierarchy citizens, and missiong human colonists have been successfully cracked," came the synthetic-toned response.

Looking up at a face that wasn't there, Shepard spoke in a confident voice, "show me what you've got." He was eager to kill something. At least then the world would make sense again.

“Garrus?” A filtered voice called from behind, “Can we speak?” it was Tali.

Garrus had already stepped out of the elevator, he wanted to get back to work. Calibrating made time go by quickly, it let him reflect, it kept him perceptive. Garrus needed his work.

“Sure.” He disguised the fatigue with a smile.

Garrus and Tali stood in front of the elevator door of Deck 3. He gestured to her to move so that they would be as out of sight as they can. This was to be a private conversation.

“What did you think was going to happen when… when Pallin had me…” Tali’s voice was wavering, her worries were getting the better of her again.

Garrus’ smile faded.

“I don’t know. You were in trouble, we were trying to get you out of it.” Garrus was speaking for himself, he had no idea what Shepard was going to do. He felt Tali did not need to know that part, at least not from him.

“I was scared, Garrus. I was more afraid at what Shepard was going to do. I knew Pallin would have killed me, but I was unsure if Shepard would.” She was speaking in a low voice.

Garrus stepped next to her, “He would never do that. You of all people should now this, Tali.”

“He had a gun on me.” Tali’s tone was deadpan.

“Technically, true. But you know he wasn’t aiming for you.”

Garrus made another smile, Tali was not at all lightened. His women-speaking skills needed work, but he made another attempt.

“Listen, we both know him. We both know him very well. If it had been any different, anyone else, he would have fired right away. But he didn’t. Shepard hesitated, and for a long while, too. That should already tell you that he was trying to figure out something else. He wouldn’t hurt you.”

Those last words struck Tali, harder than anything that had befallen on her lately. Shepard had warped her into something else, she was no longer who she was. Her dark caviler had changed her into his apprentice. She recoiled at that, Tali accepted his love because his was the only she could have, and she cherished it. Tali had become his lover and she allowed him to mutilate her character just so she can feel accepted. Every time the thought reemerges, it digs into her deeper than before.

Tali was sitting on the floor, her back against the wall. She felt tears building, but she was quiet. Tali looked at the floor, she noticed a shadow beside her. Garrus was sitting next to her, he was looking off. He could not see her face, but hew knew well enough of what was bothering her.

Garrus sighed, and inched closer to Tali.

“You two are close, you always have been. I remember when I first joined him, we went to Chora’s Den right away, you remember that place?” Tali nodded, somberly.

“We went there to look for you. I saw Shepard in action for the first time, he swept up the place and did it without a pause. Even Wrex was impressed at what he did. Once we made it to Fist, he interrogated him, threatened to hurt him and such, then he shot him after we learned you were set up.”

Tali turned and finally made eye contact with Garrus.

“Shepard killed Fist before I even got to say ‘C-Sec.’ I was actually pretty shocked to see how brutal he was, Wrex was happy to see it. And he wasn’t any easier to the rest of the people in our way. Shepard was in front of us by several meters, and we had to worry about not tripping over the bodies he left for us.” Garrus took a pause to laugh, Tali was still listening intently.

“We finally made it to the alley you were in. Shepard readied his gun, I’m sure he was just about to shoot when we heard that bang. The one you made when we began that firefight. When we first met you, I half expected him to take your data and leave. I was surprised to see him let you come at all.” Garrus took another pause, and looked up again. He was checking to see if anyone else was near.

“There was one thing I noticed that really struck me as strange, coming from Shepard. I had him pegged as brutal, unchanging, I almost envied him then because he was ready to become a Spectre. What I saw, is what changed my opinion of him, it was a small detail but one that you should know.

Shepard smiled at you on the elevator ride back. I could never read human expressions well, but I suppose he saw something in you that he liked.”

Garrus stood back up, slowly stretching his legs. He bent over slightly and offered Tali help back to her feet. She accepted his hand.

“I found that interesting. Wouldn’t you?” Garrus headed back to his work station.
