Are those fanfics ones with Tali in them? Because I can see making Shepard a techno-noob to highlight Tali's own expertise with it.

I don't think I've ever addressed the issue myself.  But then, I write Shep as an infiltrator, so...

Tali is invaluable if you're not playing as a tech class. Especially at the end when there are geth all over the place.

Just something I've noticed from most Fanfictions. Yeah they tend to be Tali stories, so perhaps its just to highlight her abilities.

She is invaluable regardless. She destroys everything with that shotgun of hers.

I always play engineer, because I feel it's like a really smart Shepard, rather than gun nut Soldier, or Sam Fisher Infiltrator, or whatever. I feel like an engineer can relate with Tali and my Shepard spends most of his time working in engineering and talking with Tali.

Very early race's idea for transcendence and immortality.  They made themselves into what they are.

Pretty much this, either that or they were using them to escape some sort of cataclysm. I don't think they are extra-galactic in origin though.
