Good question. I can't remember any particular country that killed off billions of people.

You are a mechanism. The only difference between you and an A.I. of equal sofistication is building material and configuration. You being made of carbon and water does not entitle you to more of a right to live than someone who is equally able to feel or think simply because they're held together with screws and bolts.

If that's the case then I guess breaking my computer would be murder. There's no difference between an old IBM computer and and AI except that one is simply more advanced.

That's all I have to say on this matter. In the end it is just my opinion and it is not meant to offend anyone.

Your computer does not think. It does not offer opinions. It does not have beliefs. Legion clearly does. When your computer asks you not to kill it as you begin tearing it apart, then yes, I'd call you a murderer.

I'm not offended. Merely stating my own opinions. Be at peace.

Once a Geth can bear a child, cry over a lost love, and have the feelings of intimacy, and simply become an individual, I'll agree.

Well Im sort of jumping into the convo here but, what does it mean to "be an individual?" What does it mean to be "human"?  Man I wish I kept my term paper on AI technology. :pinched:

That's the thing; the geth are not like that. They will never be like that, they never cared to be like that. The geth have achieved becoming a race based on their own features, as machines. They are different.

There is a lot of "they are different, they are inferior" going on here.

And is that not the basis of racism?

Geth are machines programed to simulate emotions. Just because something can speak and think does not necessarily mean it's a living being. Modern computers can think processes and VI programs can speak when offered the correct inquiry.

And yet the ME universe makes the point of differentiating what makes a VI and an AI. Obviously, they view an AI has something beyond a simple computer or a VI.

This whole thing treads too close to the "what is life" question, which gets ugly fast.  The quarians are more likely than other races to regard synthetics as "people" so that's the line I tend to apply.

Life and sentience can be two completely separate things, depending on how you define life.

Would you call Data from Star Trek 'life?'

Bearing a child is something an ameoba can do.

Geth can't cry, but they clearly regret what happened with the quarians. They are not comfortable with what happened. They bury the dead.

Intimacy is a base instinct to reproduce that even a non living virus can feel. If you mean love, "No data available".

Geth form a network. All geth programs are individuals, and draw different conclusions. Their sofistication reaches sentience as they work in tandem. Similar to how a team of people will be more effective than a solitary soldier. With geth, it is simply more literal.

What Measure Is A Non Human

A trope, but a thought-stimulating one. The entire subject of judging the geth as a people applies directly to this.
