Life and sentience can be two completely separate things, depending on how you define life.

Would you call Data from Star Trek 'life?'

Yes. He is self-aware, self-determinite, has desires and fears...

EDIT: Ah the top of the page...

Don't leave me. Just kidding.
I destroyed the Heretics. Rewriting them seems to be brainwashing. The Heretics chose to be hostile towards organics.

sapience is not life THEREFOR...

I consider the Geth sapient. What constitutes as life is rather nebulous. Is it restricted to organics? Must life come from other life? For the record, I consider the Geth a race that has similar rights to the other races. But I would have to agree on a definition of what life before saying that they are living.

The geth do not want to die.

Does that not constitute life?

Once a Geth can bear a child, cry over a lost love, and have the feelings of intimacy, and simply become an individual, I'll agree.

That's the thing; the geth are not like that. They will never be like that, they never cared to be like that. The geth have achieved becoming a race based on their own features, as machines. They are different.

There is a lot of "they are different, they are inferior" going on here.

And is that not the basis of racism?

The Geth do not want to become individuals. Their hope of building the Dyson Sphere, if you ask me, will make them even less individualistic than they already are. They are fundamentally different from organic life. I think that Legion makes the point that because of this, the Geth and Organic Races are not on the same level and should not be judged in the same way.

What Measure Is A Non Human

A trope, but a thought-stimulating one. The entire subject of judging the geth as a people applies directly to this.

Something similar from the Ender's Game universe. I think it's highly applicable here:

This whole thing treads too close to the "what is life" question, which gets ugly fast.  The quarians are more likely than other races to regard synthetics as "people" so that's the line I tend to apply.

I get into Geth debates often. I purposely avoid getting into the definition of what is life. The real question is whether or not a synthetic can be viewed on the same level as an organic. To some people, a machine will always be a machine no matter how close it can simulate feelings or soul. I would not describe Geth as living as a human does, but I will still hold them on equal status as one.

Actually, what I meant by that is that people are arguing you have to be more than sapient to be considered important enough for moral values to be applicable to you.

They are. In a sense. A geth that is maintained forever will live forever.

They can, however, be killed, as shown with Legion on the Collector base. "Legion", and all of his programs, were not saved, and are therefore gone forever.
