Actually, what I meant by that is that people are arguing you have to be more than sapient to be considered important enough for moral values to be applicable to you.

This whole thing treads too close to the "what is life" question, which gets ugly fast.  The quarians are more likely than other races to regard synthetics as "people" so that's the line I tend to apply.

I get into Geth debates often. I purposely avoid getting into the definition of what is life. The real question is whether or not a synthetic can be viewed on the same level as an organic. To some people, a machine will always be a machine no matter how close it can simulate feelings or soul. I would not describe Geth as living as a human does, but I will still hold them on equal status as one.

Legion is really the only example of "a" Geth. Geth operate very differently from humans. It is therefore that I cannot really place them on the same status. Especially since there is literally nothing analogous to the Geth-Organic debate on earth. I have very little to base things upon that are grounded in reality.

No problem.  I like the movie more than the book, though.

I'll admit, the book is slow at times, yes.

True enough, but some of the things Legion says is mind-expanding.

When we all finally understand each other like the Geth understand itself, will we still be human?

The Geth do not want to become individuals. Their hope of building the Dyson Sphere, if you ask me, will make them even less individualistic than they already are. They are fundamentally different from organic life. I think that Legion makes the point that because of this, the Geth and Organic Races are not on the same level and should not be judged in the same way.

in a way the superstructure actually will make the geth an individual as all of them will be sharing processes simultaneously in one body. One mind many parts, and now in a single vessel.

Geth are machines programed to simulate emotions. Just because something can speak and think does not necessarily mean it's a living being. Modern computers can think processes and VI programs can speak when offered the correct inquiry.

Jews and Africans does little to support your opinion by the way since they are living beings and not mechanisms.

You good sir   are   touching  on the true  meat of the  whole debate... When does something become life?   Is life only organic or can come thing inorganic and synthetic  be alive as well ...  Geth evolve by networking, they  grow and learn, the  fear death. The winner for me is the Geth  ask if they have a soul. That means that is self aware enough  to question its own  existence.

Let us back up from this topic  we are heading to discussion  carries such weight it could very well  break the internet  because it is  so epic and deep.

Well, would you then place the Geth collective on the same status as a hive civilization?

Once a Geth can bear a child, cry over a lost love, and have the feelings of intimacy, and simply become an individual, I'll agree.

That's the thing; the geth are not like that. They will never be like that, they never cared to be like that. The geth have achieved becoming a race based on their own features, as machines. They are different.

There is a lot of "they are different, they are inferior" going on here.

And is that not the basis of racism?

I'm starting to figure out this a is a very 'grey' subject. I don't want to sound like I blindly hate the Geth because they are different or synthetic. I do not harbor such emotions. Just that if I had to pick between synthetic or organic, it would be organic.

Aye, I'm gonna go outside for a stogie, my head hurts.

What is your definition?

I don't have one. Like I said, these debates aren't really grounded in reality. It's dealing with completely fictional stuff. We can barely even get robots to walk as a human would right now.
