Heh. I could go with simple biology, but that's not what you're looking for. You bring up a good point. We know what a human is physically, but what about philosophically? that is a question that I never really cared to answer. I may indulge it however after a few thoughts.

Ha!  I was still talking about the Jeter sequels to Blade Runner.

The greatest thought experiment on what is life is to take everything you describe as necessary for life and apply that to a virus which can be as simple as an RNA strand.

Probably. But even that is heavily subjective - just as what is "wise" differs from person to person.

I think, perhaps, a good measure of what is sapient is if the creature can think of "concepts." Ideas. Things that cannot be touched, yet go deeper than simple mechanisms of self-sustainment like hunger.
