Rannoch is more arid then Earth and it's sun is older then Sol. So I presume that it is hotter then Earth.

Then again, we don't know how far from the sun it is or its rotation periods.

Top.

How about head ridges that when hot extend back behind the skulls. Similar to those dinosaurs with the 'sail' on them. Iridescent colors flow over them in the sunlight? Nice for finding a mate :)

Would they have to amputate them at birth so they wouldn't cause complications inside of a helmet?

Not really, think of a porcupine?  It's quills can lay flat and only bristle when in danger.  Frills on a number of animals are pliable, not ridged.

Well, they would never be able to extend, so they would be pretty much useless.

In the Quarian sense of practicality I think they would be on the chopping block.

Like this chap here?

1) D'awww...

2) I think Calinstel was implying a cranial ridge on the top of the skull.

Ah, now I understand.

Believe thats a skin flap or pouch that's extended.  Similar in look maybe but not function.  And I was referring to a cranial ridge, might flow down the back some as well.  Pliable when relaxed but friming as their bodies became over heated and needed the savannah winds to assist in cooling :)    Me weird.

How about scale like skin, reflective  heat,  does the iridescent glowing  in  sunlight. as they evolved  singled a pleasurable response to outside stimuli  much like purring with pretty color.   its  Sci-Fi so we  don't have to  overly realistic...   They  eyes are like cat eyes so glow comes from evolving as night hunters.. while   reflective skin  keep them cool during the hot days on  Rannoch.

My only hesitation for a frill is it is pretty much a reptilian adaptation (due to their exothermal nature), whereas quarians are clearly mammalian.

Useless to them in the suits BUT they may or may not be still part of their bodies.  I rarily listen to my wife but I still have my ears.  No need to remove something that does not effect the suits operation or cause issues.

Porcupines have their quils and they are clearly mammals.  Just add a small skin connection between them and you have a frill :)

Have you considered it? The long-term gain could be better than the short-term.

But those helmets do have a lot of space, don't they?

Well, the males seems to have a lot of free space in their helmets, unless they have something like horse noses.Image IPB

How did Eminem get involved?

And yea, I was just referring to the frill method in general. I actually forgot about bats when I was thinking of that, though, as they use a similar technique by spreading their wings and fanning them back and forth to cool themselves.

Though it does present another issue, most animals that do have a frill are smaller predators that take prey too small to fight back. Even with the ability to 'lay down' a frill it presents a danger in that it is easily torn and can result in significant blood loss.

Hrm. Must continue to ponder.
