They could, but that comradery would take place in ME3, but by then Tali and Garrus have been with you even LONGER, so no chance, indeed.

Yeah, I didn't really like Thane but I see your point - it seems like they are going to waste.  That is why I liked how they were all "used" during the final mission

Who needs those guys when you've got a bad-ass turian Batman who totally rapes face with a sniper rifle, and a quarian engineer with hips that could kill almost as well as her shotgun?

Can't forget the story....it only makes it 2x as good.

The loyalty missions definitely helped the new squaddies...although I haven't even seen Samara in combat.

Yes.  Garrus is basically Turian Batman.

Depends on the class I guess. Never seen Samara in combat, but Grunt doesn't like dying so he joins me sometimes.
