When you are set into a fight with someone at your side, you bleed with this person, you share pain, strife, and victory. That builds bonds, these bonds are some of the most difficult to break.

I like to imagine that the squadmates have all earned and granted some newfound respect for one another, post-suicide mission.

This is true.  Jack probably trusts Miranda on the battlefield, but would as soon kick her as talk to her.  War makes strange bedfellows, and all that.

Well...no. I don't think Jack trusts Miranda on the battlefield. She does doubt Miranda's leadership abilities in the suicide mission, if you recall.

Much like a wolf introduced to a new pack, she would eventually be particularly zealous in protecting said "pack", even the ones she doesn't like.

I could see this.

Especially the ones she hates; it is a chance to prove her loyalty to Shepard, and prove to herself that she is better than everyone thinks she is.

I'm not sure about this one, really. I can't see Jack caring so much about whether she appears loyal to Shepard.

Tali was irritated. The film their bosh'tet pilot had subjected the crew to had left her seething.  She could not even look at the geth platform amongst them at this point. Why would he make us watch this....this....horror? Grumbles of displeasure were audible to the human that was lounging next to her.

Judging from how tense she sat next to him, Shepard figured that Tali was probably angry at the movie choice for the evening.  Hoping to diffuse the situation, he put his hand on her should and rubbed gently, trying to sooth her.  He felt her tense briefly, then begin to calm.

"So what did everyone think?"  Joker asked from his place in the room.  He was smiling; despite its age, he thoroughly enjoyed the classic piece of cinema humans called The Matrix.  He was not prepared for the quarian to leap to her feat.

She stood, her irritation returned.  "How could you make us watch something so horrible Joker?"  She asked with some heat. "You, Bosh'tet!  That could have been us!  And you thought it was a good film?"

Everyone quieted.  Nearly as one, the away team turned to glance at Joker.  His look of surprise made Jack snicker - until she caught Tali's glare as it focused on her. Then she laughed outright, making Tali's mood worse.

John stood, placing himself between Tali and Jeff.  "Tali, it's just a film," he began.  He held a hand up when it looked like she would argue.  "Yes, it is horrifying what happened to the living, breathing people.  But that's not what we should be taking away from the story."

"No, the real story is that, despite everything the machines tried, they could not stamp out the individuality, and the will to live from people.  "He smiled softly, as he saw her visibly begin to relax.  "That all it takes sometimes is one person to stand up and say 'enough is enough'."

Joker nodded.  "I'm sorry Tali.  I didn't think when I selected it.  My bad," he said with genuine remorse.

After a moment, Tali finally relaxed.  "I am sorry for yelling," she began.  "It is a very sensitive subject."

"It is, and it was wrong to have it brought up so casually," the commander agreed easily.  "In the future, let's think a little more carefully about what is we're watching when we try to relax.  "He shook his head.  "It would be just as bad to force some of us to sit through The Citadel."

It is not about proving it to others, but about proving it to herself. She knows that Shepard trusts her. Once she accepts that as truth, I see her as being loathe to betray that trust. She has had very few she could actually trust, that haven't betrayed her. I could see her valuing that trust immensely.

I'll be damned to hell for the second time if I let this happen, Shepard thought to himself as he listened to the admirals over the speaker as he and Tali returned to the fleet. Sharing a glance with his companions, he sped up and punched the interface on the door.

Not waiting for it to open completely, he stormed into the meeting square. The quarians near the door who saw his entrance murmured to each other and a path quickly opened. None would stand before him; the commander's biotic field was flickering around him erratically as he rushed to the admiralty board.

Tali and Garrus shared a glance. It was unusual for Shepard to get this worked up. They reached the square, and Shepard stalked up to the podium. Tali matched his stride and walked with him up to the podium as Garrus took a seat on the stairs to watch the fireworks.

"Sorry we're late...."
-----------

"Have you seen him this worked up before?" She asked the turian after the trial. Shepard was up in the cockpit of the shuttle, discussing something with Miranda as they returned to the Normandy.

Garrus nodded. "Once or twice. Remember when you got knocked unconscious by a pirate sniper on Klensal? When we were approaching the pirate base?"

"Yes, I remember getting hit, then waking up in the infirmary."

"Well, you missed all of the fun on the ground," he stated with more than a touch of sarcasm. "Shepard evac'd you, then brought me and Wrex back down to the planet. During the drop, his biotics were flickering like that."

Garrus paused, before continuing, "When we got to the base, he used the Mako to take out the towers. Then, he blew the doors to the base open." Tali's eyes widened; that was overkill, and something she couldn't picture her commander doing. The turian wasn't done with his story though.

"Shepard told me to snip anyone that was disabled," Garrus said with a chuckle. "Then he and Wrex ran in, and used their biotics to lift or knock down every single mercenary they saw. It was a shooting gallery for me."

Tali shook her head. "That was reckless."

"You have no idea," the turian agreed. "Shepard just stood there, out in the open. It was surreal; I think the pirates were actually more afraid of him than they were of the krogan. He didn't calm down until all the merc's were dead."

"After we got back, he checked on you after setting a course for the other location that human on the Citadel told him about. Once Chakwas told him you were ok, he calmed down," Garrus finished.

"Really?" She asked. The turian nodded. "I remember I was surprised when he took Ashley and Wrex with him instead of anyone else."

"Well, I was exhausted," Garrus replied. "That, and he told me to keep an eye on you." He nodded an affirmation when the quarian just stared at him.

Her gaze turned to the cockpit speculatively. He cared that much, even back then? she thought to herself. I should tell him...no, stop being selfish, she reprimanded herself. It was just the same concern he gave everyone...

But try as she might, a small flicker of warmth erupted in her chest. Her commander cared; truly cared. It might have been an unrealistic dream, but Tali spent the rest of the trip thinking on her commander, and everything she longed to tell him but dare not speak.

If only...

True.  But it did revolve around Tali - specifically on whether the two could actually befriend each other.  So it was good relevant times, at least.

You're very....in-tune with Jack, aren't you? Or maybe you speculate like this with all the characters. It's refreshing, given what is usually discussed.

I speculate like this with all the characters. I happen to actually like all of them. Not as LI's for My Shepards, of course, but that is personal preference. I find all of the characters engaging, 3 dimensional, and memorable. Plus, my This and That series features all of them, save Samara and Thane (and Thane will still get some bits), mostly 'cause I can't see either of them actually staying with Shepard after the battle, not 'cause I dislike them.

Jack is one of my favorites though, along with Garrus and Tali. And Grunt. By the dice, Grunt gets some of he very best lines in the game.

Yea. I'm actually interested in starting a dialog between the Jack and Tali threads. That is what happened with the Miranda and Liara threads, oddly enough. Given how many "talimancers" like Jack, I think it could work nicely. We'll see though.

The Jack thread is pretty good. You should post there more often. As should Azint and privateerkev. Would be fun.

Link them the last couple of pages, and see what they say!  If it sparks dialogu, let me know, and I'll jump over there and see what there is to see.  As long as it is civil.  I like civil, logical discussions. ;)

Well, I try and keep as in character as possible when I write.  And, since I am a writer, I tend to analyze the characters as I play the game, trying to see what facets are focused on, revealed, etc.  And Mass Effect is a phenominal series for this.

I'll make sure to do that, probably. When the Jack thread is most active.
