He was in the alliance or something. It isn't very well explained. Garrus is really the only one that makes sense as a leader tbh.
Garrus ftw

I'm not sure it's that so much as it's the fact that your team is made of specialists and those people just happen to be the correct specialists for those jobs. Everyone else can't do them to the ability that those people can.Collider wrote...
I really think that only Garrus, Tali, Legion, Jack, and Kasumi (maybe Samara) were represented well in the suicide mission. Everyone else was off.
And I really think Zaeed is well-represented. If you make him team leader of anything, it goes so wrong, as it should.

And when he made it the first time I thought: "Let's see if Garrus can survive a second round."
The choice of biotic was a no-brainer, because Samara said that she could do it just fine, so I went with her.
No one died, I blew up the base, and told TIM to go f**k himself after the epic escape.

I picked Mordin as the tech specialist the first time through because I was scared that if I sent either Tali or Legion, they would get killed somehow and I was more willing to risk Mordin.Someone With Mass wrote...
When the game told me on my first playthrough to pick a tech expert, at the top of the list was Tali, and I thought it was a good choice. When it came to leader, Miranda and Jack had their argument, so I thought: "Yeah, no one likes Miranda so I'll go with...Garrus. He lead a team before all this. Shouldn't be a problem."
And when he made it the first time I thought: "Let's see if Garrus can survive a second round."

The only specialist job I'm comfortable with giving Zaeed is escorting the crew back. He seems to be fine with that as long as he's loyal. Otherwise, he's just there to spit out damage and follow someone better suited to the task of leadership.
I picked Legion to escort the crew back the first time.

I guess the Collectors had enough of taking bullets from his Widow to the face when I helped Tali with the valves.

I picked Thane to go in the vents for the first playthrough, because hey, he used to crawl around the vents, so he must be good at that sort of thing. Zaeed got to be escort without loyalty.
2 deaths, both not so big a problem, since Thane was going to be a dead man anyways and Zaeed just some merc without any special talents.
And I was so afraid to send Tali to the vent, fearing that she would die. I kept her with me all the time, and Garrus was the leader, naturally. And Samara as a biotic.
And then we reunited, three old bandits and killed the terminator.

My reason for always picking Mordin as escort now is because he's not really a heavy-hitter and would be better dealing with injured or sick crew members. Tali comes with me to the final battle because I know I can keep her safe despite it being the EPIC BOSS FIGHT.
I did this, too. Plus I had the Cain (AKA, the Middle Finger Gun) to deal with the big bad.
I was rewarded by not only saving Tali from falling, but having her return the favor and drag me onto the Normandy. Jurassic PARK.

I agree, it makes sense that it does go wrong - but there really is no role you can specifically assign to Zaeed. He helps a lot in the "Hold the Line" section, but the Hold the Line section sucked and wasn't properly explained to the player.Kikaimegami wrote...

Garrus, Tali, Legion, Jack, and Kasumi all have roles that make sense, and they are more fair to the player because it's explained and shown better. Garrus manages to ****** off every mercenary group on Omega because he's such a badass team leader. Tali's an engineering genius, Legion's the smartest Geth evar, Jack's the most powerful human biotic, and Kasumi's an infiltration master. Samara was also well represented, although there are people who chose her as team leader because she was hella old or something. Morinth is also well represented because no one is really going to choose her for anything besides biotic specialist.
Everyone else:
Jacob: No indication whatsoever he would be a good team leader (before suicide mission).
Miranda: See Jacob.
Mordin: Has literally no role in the suicide mission. I guess you could send him to escort the crew, but for most people maybe they'd go with someone less squishy instead to ensure that the crew gets out alive.
Thane: Literally no role besides the "Hold the line" which was never well explained to the player.
Zaeed: See Thane
Grunt: See Thane

I didn't have anyone die on the hold the line part, but I've read that a lot of other people have, particularly Mordin. They should have either allowed us to assign a vanguard guy or better explain that Shepard should probably leave defensively orientated people to hold the line.Kikaimegami wrote...
Hm I didn't really have that much trouble understanding the hold the line bit. It just seemed to me to place the damage sponges or heavy hitters there.

It only gets complicated with Kasumi, now. Since I always send Mordin back, and take Tali with me, I've never had any stupid hold the line deaths. I just started taking Thane wih me, because his dialogue at the HtL is terrible, and I miss out on either Jack or Grunt's line. And Grunt's line is made of pure ****ing win.Titanium Man wrote...
