That seems to be their primary diet. We do know that the Flotilla makes it's own from plants on the liveships.

making food into paste makes it easy to clean, store, and eat inside the suit... at least that's what the codex says... and nice natalie dee comic:blink:

Mostly nutrient paste fed through a tube. Not the most wholesome thing, but they can eat normally with their teeth under sterilized conditions.

That's what I've heard, anyway.

"Nutrient paste" seems to compose most of their diet, however they can eat "normal food" (and by normal, what's safe for their amino-acid chirality).

However, eating the 'normal' food poses some risk, since it would require removing their mask. But they do have lips and teeth and all that, so they can eat stuff besides paste.

“Wait Tali you've never had a drink?” Shepard was trying to remain
serious, but his face betrayed his surprise.

“Well, n-no, I tasted a few Quarian wines when I got back from my pilgrimage
but I've never had any spirits and I've never been...intoxicated.

“Well, this is going to be a fun night. Don't move a muscle.” Shepard said
with an unnaturally wide grin and started towards the bar.

Tali was obviously flustered now. She felt like a child, felt as if
everyone was looking straight through her mask. Fermentation and
distillation was seen as a waste of resources on the Flotilla, and as
such alcohol was usually only avaliable to privilaged familes, mainly
those of ship captains. She always felt guilty having access, being
an admiral's daughter, so she never really took part in it.

She looked up to see Shepard returning, a glass of clear colourless fluid
in one hand and what looked like a nutrient paste canister in the
other. He gave her the canister with a warm smile before jumping in
on the current conversation at the table. She put it on a special
hook just under her mask and connected a tube to port near her
mouth.She applied some suction and as the fluid trickled into her
mouth she thought Not bad. Certainly stronger than the wine, but I
could get used to it. And then she swallowed.

“Keelah *cough* how *cough* *cough* do you people drink this!?” she blurted as she watched Shepard down half a glass of what she assumed was the same substance she had just spit all over
her faceplate.


“You'll get used to it.” Shepard said with a chuckle. Everyone else was trying to contain their laughter, for fear of Tali's shotgun.
