because  BW wants the whole to survive the canon was written with  everyone coming back. If you don't play favorites  during the Mission  and pick the best people for the job you come out okay.

Then again. killing off almost the entire squad is so pointless. And some of them might be able to help you in ME3, so why kill them?

I don't see "I didn't like them" as a valid excuse. It's just a waste of time, and you won't exactly gain something from it.

And yet some people had trouble with keeping them alive, even when they tried. I guess the learning curve was too steep for them.

You can easily kill a lot of them by just blowing off getting ship upgrades, or skipping loyalty missions and jumping into the relay as soon as you can.  When you are playing on Insanity, it can be tempting to skip a mission or two to just get through the thing.
