What does everyone assume the canon default story would be for Mass Effect 3 referring to the Mass Effect 2 squad member's fate? Would it be told as they all live? Some die?

Slight problem with that. You need 2 squaddies to get by.

That, and that's too big of a 'punishment' for not playing the first two games.  You're basically cutting out all character related content in ME3 for anyone who didn't play ME2, a horrible business move.  The only person that didn't live in the ME2 default was Wrex, and he wasn't coming back to the team anyway.  I expect all characters alive in the default personally, though I'm sure they will throw in some catch, like Tali being exiled and Morinth being alive.

We forget to consider that probably nobody is going to buy Mass Effect 3 if they haven't played the second.

That doesn't really affect anything though.  Shep can do whatever he wants whenever he wants, and no one is going to stop him

Though I should mention that the council being dead actually doesn't matter, only that Udina is the councilor.  Anderson still gives you spectre status regardless of the council status.

Well, Bioware certainly does have a handful don't they? They said there would be over 1000 variables in ME3 though, so that alone will say there will be a crap load of different things. One thing I hate is that if you have a ME1 character love interest, and then followed up a ME2 love interest, it's called cheating and will come to haunt you with negative repercussions on the ME3 somehow.

I expect similar to ME2.  There are a lot of different variables in the game, and tiny changes based on how you played ME1, but you don't need to play ME1 to enjoy 2.  To pull that off again should be possible. 

As far as the consequences thing, that's more fan hype than anything.  A developer mentioned the word consequences a couple months ago in a random interview, and its been run with ever since.  I expect a slightly more emotional version of the ME1 choice scene personally, or something along those lines.  Nothing too bad.

Well... they're daft.

We as a group of people discussing the game on an online forum 6 months after the game is out think like that, the Bioware team looking to make as much money as possible off the game doesn't think like that.  Plenty of people will buy the last game in a trilogy first, simply because its the newest.  If they like that, then maybe they go back and the other 2.  Bioware can't ignore these people just because they're morons
