They all find their niches, some more than others. Like Liara would be useless without the Ilos information. And Mordin is as important to the ME2 story as Tali was for the ME1 story.

Yeah. Galaxy would be fucked without Tali.

Yup, she's probably the most plot-important squadmate in ME1. Some may say Liara knowing about Illos was as well, but Shepard could have just read up on Prothians and skipped Liara altogether if he really cared that much.

ME1's plot seemed to hinge on such a fragile time frame that the galaxy may have been ultimately lost if it weren't for a few characters.  Tali is one of them, though my favorite is Powell.  If it wasn't for that lazy criminal, we would have never known that Saren was behind it, we would have never looked for Tali, and Saren would have succeeded
