DAMMIT! My internet cut out last night just as I was writing this. Screw it, I know it's ten hours late, but I really wanted to post this.

She holds the paradoxical position of both 'the one that got away' and 'the one that stayed'.

Tali wasn't an option during the hunt for Saren for a myriad of reasons. Suits...amino-acids... the somewhat serious note of him not really knowing how old a pilgrim is ("I know she's twenty something, but if I dated a twenty-something year old asari, I'd be shot in the street. If I dated a twenty-something year old salarian, her kids would beat me to death for grave robbing... and there's really not a polite way to ask her."). Most importantly was that no matter what, she'd have to leave, go back to the Flotilla, and probably never return. So, Shepard choked his feelings and let her go... but not before pouring his heart into getting that Geth data for her. Besides... there was Ashley, who really is quite charming once you get to know her. And for a while, this worked.

Then he died.

So, everything changed. He wakes from the dead to work with terrorists. ****ing Cerberus. Cerberus "You-remember-your-squad-on-Akuze?" Cerberus. Except Jacob seems alright. Miranda, not so much. And they need him. That's the problem with my Shepard, he really would sell his soul to stop another Mindoir, and the Reapers are looking to repeat that on a scale he can't even conceive of. With that in mind, he heads to Freedom's Progress to investigate.

And found an old familiar feeling.

Tali being busy didn't bother him. Well, it did, but nothing he couldn't rationalize and try to put behind him. Didn't stop him from holding a torch for her- one he didn't even ask for. That whole list of excuses not to start anything with Tali? Well, she's clearly older now, and she's outside of the Fleet. By comparison, those other reasons seemed... small.

Here we have a problem. See, my Shepard just isn't the love 'em and leave 'em type, thus he was dutybound to find Ashley. Except Anderson didn't tell him, and according to the Illusive Man, everything about her was double classified. So, like Tali, finding her was just a matter of playing the Waiting Game. Thankfully, Garrus was around. Garrus, my Shepard's friend, compatriot, brother-from-another-mother, and lifeline. Garrus kept him grounded, along with Joker and Dr. Chakwas.

And like the bro he is, he stood up to Ash on Horizon.

Ashley. Dear God. She could've said anything, anything else. She could've said she was busy, she had duties of her own, her record was bad enough without getting involved with Cerberus. But no, she called Shepard a traitor... and that was the final straw. She -of all people!- should've known Shepard. Known that if he had to work with Cerberus to stop the Collectors, it was goddamn serious. Not only that, but she didn't even give him the one thing Anderson or ever Khalisah Al-Jilani gave him: five minutes to try to explain. Explain that Cerberus wasn't a monolithic terror organization. That for every Telton, Akuze, or Overlord, there was a Kelly Chambers, Sgt. Gardner, or Ken Donelly and Gabby Daniels. Hell, even Jack could live with these people. Why Ash? Why?

So, bitterly, my Shepard left her. Or maybe it's a case of her leaving him. Doesn't matter; when it comes down to it, nobody but nobody calls Adrian Shepard a traitor.

The next set of Dossiers after Horizon barely cooled before heading to Haestrom. Not that Shepard had any particular designs on her at the moment- by then, new doubts had started to fill the void the old doubts left ("There is no way she'd be interested in a hick colonist like me...")- but she was his crew. Shepard loves his crew. They're the only family he's got. The Collectors didn't have a clue what they were getting themselves into when they took the crew, but the Heretics on Haestrom got a sneak preview. By sheer force of will and overwhelming firepower, Shepard destroyed the geth. Whether Shepard would ever admit this to himself or not, Kal'Reegar was saved entirely because Tali asked him to. The woman has powers.

So, she integrated herself onto the Normandy. Whether Cerberus liked it or not - and they didn't seem to mind, another strike against Ashley's rage - he hired her on as Chief Engineer. And, like Garrus said, it's just like old times. Until she got charged with treason.

Full stop. Mathematical impossibility. Tali'Zorah is not a traitor. Shepard, once again, poured his heart into seeing her out of that. "I didn't represent one of yours, I represented one on mine." Nobody but nobody messes with Shepard's crew.

Then... feelings happen. Systematically, without even thinking about it, she burned away every one of Shepard's doubts. She was interested. And dammit, so was he. And he was going to see this through this time if it was the last thing he did.

And he did. And he will as long as she keeps him.

The last loose end: Ashley. She still cares too. But he'll burn that bridge when he gets to it, no matter how much it hurts.
