I fail at starting these but I will try.
What do the Quarians use Deuterium for?

what the hell is Deuterium?

Uh... starship fuel, just like everyone else.

Isn't deuterium quite low-tech compared to the eezo engines?

Thats what I thought, but they are using outdated technology, but I don't think it would be that old...

Engines don't run on Element Zero. Drive cores just lower or raise mass, different propulsion systems actually move the ship, including during FTL flight. Either chemical rockets, ion drives, fusion engines, or matter-antimatter reactions fill that purpose.

Deuterium would be used in fusion engines.

They do. Elevator conversation in ME1 confirmed they are rare but in existance.

The only ship that uses mass effect fields for propulsion is the Normandy.

Yeah that's what I meant. Wait. Ships do go FTL with their own drives? So much for the hard sci-fi.

The reason you can't do that in the real world is because the mass of the ship prevents it. Theoretically, if the ship was massless, regular engines would accelerate to lightspeed and beyond just fine. That's what mass effect cores do: reduce the mass of a ship to zero so it can go faster than light.

To, not beyond. Still a limit for massless particles.

The only thing not explained is volume, wouldn't it have to be zero as well?
