Y'know... I started writing a response... Something that encapsulates why Tali and Shepard's romance is the only one I can see within the trilogy of Mass Effect...

And I can't find the words.

I find it funny that they tried to replace that aspect with Thane in ME2.

Of course. They wanted femShep to have some tough choices. Otherwise, every single one of the would've gone with Garrus, because a choice between a badass vigilante, who's also a turian or the Cerberus grunt with racial slurs and a very corny personality, is a no-brainer.

They wanted to give Thane a Woobie factor, like Jack.

Problem?

GARRUS IS WAY WORSE.

Yeah, Thane's a bro, and I love his character, dude lost his wife, screwed up raising his kid... and he's dying... and I'll do what I can to help...

But, come on...

Garrus was your student, he had your back against A REAPER. Against Saren. He quit his job to learn from you, and once you died, was so utterly devastated, he moved to a station to essentially commit suicide in the most epic way possible, by single handedly get the entire galaxy to try and kill him. after he finds out you're still alive, he gets his face blown off, STILL gets back up to fight for you, and the first thing he does is SMILE, charging out of bed just to see you. He's lost everything, and you're all he has left. His job, his team, his relationship with his father, and for a while, the only person he respected and admired in the entire galaxy. Dude is there for you, every step of the way. He's the most epic badass on your entire team, while also being a hopelessly awkward and adorable guy who simply can't believe something in his life might actually go right for once.

She wants sex. That's pretty nice, but her own character is pretty much non-existent..

She tried to pull a Tali with all that talk about her people (or certain rumors about them) and have romance plot dialogues at the same time. It just feels rushed. Like her attraction to Shep comes out of nowhere, and has no time to develop properly.

Maybe thats why Tali and Garrus are the most popular? because there relationship, romantic or no, spans two games, making the romance seem more natural

Yeah. Pretty much that. But there are some people that simply can't see it that way. They're just going for who's the most interesting at the moment.

No.

But I've gone on some LONG rants.

Here's my Miranda Rant.

Start from the beginning. You wake up, this woman is telling that this station is under attack. You make your way through the station, and within five seconds of meeting her, she shoots someone in the neck without hesitating. First off, she just murdered someone in cold blood, and we never really find out why. On the one hand, Wilson could have gone berserk and and she was just getting revenge, but that doesn't add up. Why not take him alive and find out who he was working for? Cerberus is all about information, TIM is even described as being the negative of the Shadow Broker because of this. That means, either Miranda, and by extension, TIM, aren't doing their jobs, which is uncharacteristic, or they already know the answer. That she was so quick to silence Wilson, and that Shepard woke up to face an army of mechs brings an interesting theory to light. TIM ordered Miranda to sabotage the mechs, testing Shepard, and wiping out all traces to Lazarus beyond her, Jacob, and Shepard. Given TIM's methods on Akuze and otherwise, this doesn't seem to be too farfetched. At any rate, you have this woman, a colded blooded killer, who either can't keep her people in line, or is willing to wipe out her entire team and lie to your face about it.

Moving forward, we find out she doesn't like Shepard,or rather, is jealous of him. Her conduct on Minuteman Station is... irritating, but passable, all things considered. Unfortunately, it doesn't improve on Freedom's Progress. Upon learning of the events that took place on the flotilla, Miranda passes it off as nothing personal. Unfortunately, what Prazza described was indeed accurate. Cerberus killed twenty people, tried to kill six hundred, civilians and children included, simply to continue performing experiments on a child. Whether it was personal or not is irrelevant. Many sociopaths kill in an impersonal manner, but it does not alleviate the gravity of their crime. Twenty families will never see their loved ones again, and many more could have died. To toss that aside so casually is... callous, at best. This shows a blatant ability to lie to Shepard's face. Her conduct with Tali and Veetor is also unforgiveable. She is willing to subject this traumatized young man to painful and cruel interrogations, knowing that any intel they get from him will be bad or useless. Miranda is not stupid. She knows this. Afterward, she finally warms up to you on the Normandy, despite being cold as ice to you before. It's obvious she's smiling through her teeth at you via the Illusive Man's request. She comes of as fake, phony. It's a personality trait I do not admire.

Getting to know Miranda a bit more, you find out she is very insecure about her appearance and abilities. She feels her genetic tailoring invalidates all of her accomplishments. As a rule of thumb, I don't like characters who use perfection as a flaw. Edward Cullen from Twilight does this, and it's why I hate the character. That is from a literary standpoint. From an in game standpoint, it just comes off as incessant whining. Sure, you can comfort Miranda, but you shouldn't have to. Not when other characters have had it much worse. Granted, I feel for Miranda, but any sympathy I gain for her is quashed by her attitude towards Jack. Jack was a torture victim. She had electricity racked through her body through her entire childhood. She was turned into a relentless killer as a child, an upon escape, was raped and sold as a slave. She's be raped multiple times, used, betrayed, and it all goes back to Cerberus. That Miranda is incapable of at least feeling some sympathy for Jack, or at least, expressing it to her, worsens this. Jack has had it FAR worse than Miranda, but doesn't complain to the same degree, and when she does complain, it's justified. Miranda only irritates me here when after complaining about her own problems, she rails away at Jack for her problems, which are considerably worse.

Eventually, we find that Miranda has a sister she cares about. I usually encourage Miranda to get to know her sister, but frankly, it doesn't change anything for me. So she cares about someone. So what? She's still a merciless murderer, a terrorist, and an all around unpleasant person who has shown a constant need to lie to me. If she wants to build a life for herself and her sister, she has my blessing, but as I've said, when she supports destroying lives such as Veetor's I can't bring myself to feel sympathy.

Then, there is the suicide mission. Miranda ****ed up Lazarus, but still thinks she can lead a fire team? She thinks she's more qualified than Garrus, who lead a team for two years the same size as your current team? What are her credentials? Sure, she brought Shepard back, but it ended in disaster. Like Garrus and Jack say, nobody trusts her, I don't even trust her. I'd gladly give the position to Garrus, who has proven himself a friend many times over, someone I KNOW will get the job done. At any rate, I will admit that her kicking TIM to the curb at the Reaper fight is quite endearing. If nothing else, I do hope her and Jacob develop into something more than what was given in Mass Effect 2, but given what I have to work with, My current opinion stands.

"Damn it has been a long day", Shepard grumbled to himself as he waited for the decontamination suite to finish leading to his cabin. As he entered, he was struck by the quiet. It was an unusual, and unwelcome change. Not unexpected though.

I miss my girls, he thought to himself as he looked over at his desk. On it sat two pictures. One was of he and Tali, napping. It had been taken by Kaiden on a mission back on the first Normandy. The second picture made him smile.

It was of he and Tali in a clean room in the Migrant Fleet. They were huddled around a small, clear bed and bubble unit. Inside was a young quarian girl. She was sleeping in the picture, but he and Tali looked so happy.

The child wasn't theirs, of course. When the Normandy's crew had gotten word of a series of experiments that Cerberus had been performing on quarians and turians, they had rushed to put a stop to it. It seemed the experiment was to find a way to make biotics out of both races - especially since both races had such a notoriously low rate of viable biotics.

That was only part of Cerberus' plan, of course. Once they could perfect it, they had planned on using the same program with humans. The notes Shepard had found seemed to indicate that if the project could get a 30% success rate amongst turians and quarians, then the system would be over 90% for humans.

But the time the team got there, the experiment was already active. They managed to shut it down, but three of the subjects had already given birth - two turians and one quarian. Though the turian Hierarchy picked up the turian mothers and their children, there was no one for the quarian.

The quarian that Cerberus violated had died during childbirth. Only the child had lived. Nearly a year old, the child was slightly malnourished, and definitely attention deprived, but otherwise healthy. Just very, very alone. Cerberus had not even given the child a name, just a number.

Shepard smiled. Tali had not needed to convince him. One shouting match with the admiralty board later, and he and Tali had become responsible for the child. If she showed signs of biotics, he had argued that his own biotics, as well as that of Miranda, Jacob, and Jack, would be the best instructors for the child.

That had been five years ago. Their daughter, Ashi'Zorah nar Normandy (he and Tali had not been formally bonded when the child was brought to the Normandy), was a regular handful. Not a biotic, at least not yet, she was just a normal, inquisitive child. She was a bright spot on the Normandy, that had even managed to get Subject Zero wrapped around one of her little fingers.

And he missed them. Tali and Ashi were visiting the migrant fleet for a couple of weeks, so the little girl could spend some time with children her own age. Sadly, there was little to no rest for the Normandy. The reapers had not yet arrived, and Shepard was busier than ever making sure the coalition he had put together would stay together long enough to stop their mutual enemy.

At least now he had proof it would be soon. Their most recent mission was to one of the small geth outposts on the edge of the galaxy. The geth had placed them there strategically to watch for the old machines. It had paid off.

One battle, a destroyed space station, and another dead Reaper later, and Shepard had his proof that the Reapers were nearly here. The Normandy, with the assistance of the geth and a reckless mission to board a Reaper had seen to that. And now, Shepard was just bone weary. Even as he sat down on his bed, he was activating his omnitool.

A few moments later, and a real time image appeared. Tali was looking back at him, her eyes shining.

"Hey beautiful," he said tiredly.

"Hello Captain," she replied, letting her accent show through thickly. "We've missed you."

He smiled. "I've missed both of you too. How's our little girl?"

"She's the joy of the pod," Tali answered, her eyes soft and pleased. "Everyone here loves her." He nodded. "Will you be back soon?"

"On our way to the fleet now," he responded. "I can't wait to see you."

Tali nodded eagerly. "I look forward to it as well Captain," she said seductively. "And you'll be in time. Just in time."

"Oh?"

"Yes, it is time for her to receive her first suit," Tali said nervously. "Thanks to living on the Normandy her immune system is stronger than most quarians, but she will still need a suit."

Shepard nodded sadly. "At least she will be able to take it off occasionally on the Normandy though," he added after a moment. "That's something, at least."

The engineer agreed, equally sad. "I had hoped Rannoch would be ready, but we are just barely able to get power to the facilities for food and fabrication. It will still be years before we can safely remove our suits here."

"Well, I'll be there in two days. Now where is our little girl?"

"Ashi! Your father wants to say hello!" Tali called, looking to the left of her screen. The commander could hear the tell-tale sounds of pattering feet and laughed as Tali was nearly tackled away from the screen.

"Papa!" The young girl called out as she smiled adoringly at her father. Shepard was wearing an answering grin. "Ashi misses you!"

"I miss you too, Princess," he replied, his voice warm. "I'll get to see you soon too!"

Ashi nodded, then her smile dropped. "Mama says I'll have a suit soon, just like her," she said slowly.

"That's right. You're getting so big, pretty soon you'll be just like your mother."

"But Mama always has to wear her suit, unless it's for a special occasion, right?"

The commander nodded. "That's right Ashi. It's not safe to take the suit off except when it is special." The little girl nodded. She then turned her big eyes fully on him.

"But why doesn't Papa have to wear one?"

Shepard closed his eyes and winced. Finally, he opened them. Ashi was gazing at him, worry and absolute trust in her eyes. Trust that he would make everything ok. Tali was looking at him as well, sympathy and grief in her eyes.

"Well Princess," he started. "You know how you have to be very, very careful in your bubble? That you can get sick if it gets broken?" The young quarian nodded at him. He sighed What was he going to tell her?

It hit him in a flash. "That's because you and mama are very special. Your mother has told you about quarian health, hasn't she?" Again the child nodded.

"Well, humans don't get sick the same way quarians do. So it isn't as dangerous to be out of a suit."

The little girl frowned. "But that's not fair!"

"No, it isn't," Tali said as she held the girl close. "One day, we might not need the suits all the time. But until then, they keep us safe."

"And nothing is more important to me than both of you being safe Ashi," Shepard finished. He yawned. "Ok both of you. Papa's had a long, long day, and needs his beauty sleep if he wants to look nice for Mama when he gets there."

Ashi beamed at her father. "Ok Papa! Love you!" Shepard responded in kind, and she climbed down and ran off to play. Tali watched her leave, then turned back to the screen.

"That was good, what you said about our suits and immune systems," she said, a smile in her voice.

"I just don't want her to worry. I want her to know, all the time, that she is loved and that she is special," Shepard replied with a sigh.

"Oh, she does," Tali said with a laugh. "She doesn't stop talking about how nice and kind her Papa is, and how he lets her sit in the cockpit with him as the ship flies."

He rubbed the back of his head in embarrassment. "Well, she likes it," he said defensively. Tali laughed.

"You are such a softy, John," she said as her laughter trailed off. She did thoroughly enjoy how embarrassed the Hero of the Citadel was at the moment.

"It is one of the things I love about you," she added after a moment. "Soft, kind, gentle. You'll drop what you are doing if you can for her." The commander could hear a hiccup from his lover; she was fighting tears. "It's everything I always wanted out of a father."

"Tali..."

She waved away his sympathy. "It's ok John. I told you a long time ago; I did get better - you. And you have never let me down. You never will."

He held his free hand to his heart, then brought it up to the screen. She returned the gesture. Then he spoke, softly, "I love you Tali. You and our little girl."

"Always, right?" She asked, her tears falling softly.

"Every day," Shepard responded with a nod. "Good Night love." They waved to each other as the connection terminated.

He stood and went back to his terminal. He pulled up the data they had recovered, and began studying it. New data on the strengths, and weaknesses of the Reapers, as well as a starting estimation of how many they could expect.

"Every day," he whispered to himself as he worked. He was determined to ensure he would have every chance to give both of his girls the longest Always he absolutely could.

QFT.  The above is why my favorite two squadmates in Mass Effect are Garrus and Tali.  Obviously, I'm a bit more biased towards Tali, because I'm a guy, and Garrus is my bro, man, but...c'mon, Tali!.

Seriously, though, of all the squadmates we've had between ME1 and ME2, I'd be perfectly happy with an ME3 squad containing Tali, Garrus and Wrex (if he would just leave Tuchanka, damn him!)

The ME2 squadmates were good, and very well written, I don't mean to take anything away from them.  But replace any of them (with the possible exception of Mordin, that scientist salarian is comedy gold!) with any other character, and ME2 is just as good a game, in my opinion.  You lose Garrus or Tali, well...then ME2 is almost not worth playing.

Just my opinion, thought I'd throw it out there.

I have many, that's merely the only one I have on record.

I also have this one about quarian sexuality.

---

I think a lot of it is similar to human relationships, at least in the aspect that everyone is different, has different tastes, different wants.

I, personally, think quarians put a lot more emphasis on trust than humans, as each encounter with a new partner would bring a higher statistical probablility of death. Mating for life seems likely, as does some kind of union or union ceremony similar to marriage. As for practice outside of the suit, I imagine it's similar to what you'd see in humans. Different couples are into different things, will try new things if a partner or both desire, will find things that make both people happy. Communal nature suggests the actual sharing and participation of both people is what is the most important. Allowing the trust to grow and expand. I personally feel this lends itself to a more open minded way of thinking. Couples who are willing to build and share with their partner will inevitably be willing ot try different things. Similar to long term human relationships.

As for relationships with other species, again, depends mostly on the other person. Anyone who is willing to have sex with someone of another species would likely be inherently VERY open minded. That Tali and that one girl on Illium were so open about liking humans suggests that quarians place the most emphasis on how much they trust a person, meaning that as long as they trust that person enough to take off their suit, they're likely very enthusiastic and open everything else. Once a quarian is out of their suit, they're risking their life for the other person. Once you cross that threshold, race, gender, and sexual tastes wouldn't matter as much as it would for two humans. While I'm not sure about how quarians feel about same sex relationships... someone pointed out that it may be more common amongst quarians, who emphasize trust and birth control, possibly leading to the practice being slightly less taboo than it would be in our culture, or so one would think.

I know I'm probably going to get skewered for this one... but bondage also seems like it could potentially be popular amongst quarians experiencing a relationship with another race. Taking of the suit requires an extreme level of trust, you're essentially trusting your partner with your body, your health, and your life. A non-quarian would not be able to replicate this on the same level as their partner. Bondage presents a unique solution, as the non-quarian must now entrust THIER well-being and health to their partner, effectively leveling the playing field a bit. I sincerly doubt masochism or sadism would be very popular though, as I doubt a quarian would be too interested in spending what little time they have outside of their suit inflicting pain, and inflicting it on them would just be plain irresponsible. Roleplay would likely vary, I can see it going either way. Important to remember that each quarian and partner is different. Some relationships are one-dimensional, others are not.

Beyond that, I'm sure that any strong relationship is built on the same principles, regardless of race. Love, trust, and making your partner happy. As long as you have that, the rest really doesn't matter.

"And nothing is more important to me than both of you being safe Ashi," Shepard finished.

...all Liara talks about is sex.

You say that like it's a bad thing.

My thoughts exactly

She wants sex. That's pretty nice, but her own character is pretty much non-existent..

She tried to pull a Tali with all that talk about her people (or certain rumors about them) and have romance plot dialogues at the same time. It just feels rushed. Like her attraction to Shep comes out of nowhere, and has no time to develop properly.

The devs didn't have time for some drawn-out romance dialogue, they were breaking ground with human-hot blue alien sex.
