Righteous.

I actually write out profiles for my main Shepards.

Anyone care to see the profiles for my main two?

No, but a Renegade ending Shep likely wouldn't be with Tali.  In the end, a fully renegade playthrough almost invariably embraces Cerberus ideals - and Tali would have no allowance for that, IMO

In my experience, you can only hurt someone so much with fists, unless you plan to beat them nearly to death.

Want to REALLY screw with someone? Get into their head mentally.

Then again, I've been called ruthless before, so whether you should actually listen to my advice is debatable.

Just try not to get yourself killed. I'd rather hate to lose my first commission.

Don't worry, I'm scrappy and if all else fails I'll write something in my will. Shouldn't be an issue, though. Going away get together for a co-worker, so unless someone is dumb enough or drunk enough to mess with the girls I'll be good.

That's how I imagine my Shep's romance.  He can be a hard man to deal with.  He's blunt, judgmental, and can be outright insulting.  But to his credit, he tries to stop himself from getting too riled up.  Still, it causes an interesting wrinkle in his relationship with Tali.  (Psssst - he's also kinda sour that she can't naturally have a daughter with him, don't tell!)

I always like reading people's summaries of their Shepards. Never could really write one of my own, just a summation of actions with specific reasonings that may or may not relate to each other. Try explaining a paragon Shepard who left the Council to die, destroyed the Heretics, and kept the base. I can only debate it so many times.

Joshua Niles Shepard

Earthborn/ Sole Survivor
Infiltrator/ Commando/ Assault Rifles

Race: Caucasian/ Native American
Notable Features: Bright Blue Eyes, Dark Brown Hair, and facial scarring.

Personality: Joshua is a loner by nature, not out of social awkwardness, but by choice. Other people tend to annoy him and get in his way. He likes working alone out of a sense of independence, due mostly to his history as a teenager. He believes strongly in personal freedom, and cares very little for government as a whole, feeling it more often than not restricts one's personal freedoms. Due to his belief in individualism, he tries his best to judge people on a case by case basis, feeling a deep resentment for racism, on any level. While he believes very strongly in fairness, Joshua also believes that one must make their own way in the universe, and that doing so is what makes you strong. Relying on others is a costly gambit he has little patience for. In terms of personal relationships, Joshua has had very few, feeling that most people are either weak or selfish. He doesn't begrudge them this, so long as said people don't interfere with his solitude. He doesn't make friends easily and he's never known family, but the rare few bonds he does make are life lasting and unbreakable. He is by nature a fairly selfless person. He is willing to give of himself for others, be that by treating the wounded, by protecting the weak, or by executing dangerous criminals. He tries to find the best way through a situation, and help as many as he can, but he has no problems with killing unrepentant criminals, or hurting one person to help a dozen.

History: Shepard was born on Earth, in the western United States. He grew up in a Desert Metropolis, and as such feels quite at home on inhospitable worlds. While he knows his world has seen better days, Joshua loves Earth, it's a giant slum, but it's his slum, his home, and he wouldn't have it any other way. As a teenager, Shepard felt he was missing out on life, due to not having a family, and he joined a gang for a brief time to fill the hole. He quickly grew disgusted with them though, realizing that they only relied on one another for the strength they lacked. He secretly manipulated many of his fellow gang members into getting caught or killed, feeling betrayed by their inadequacy, and hating how the used others or hurt them for their own benefit. Not having much of a future ahead of him, he enlisted at Eighteen into the Alliance Marine Corps.

Military Service: Shepard hoped to join the Alliance and use it to obtain at least a decent education in Medicine. What he didn't expect was his remarkable affinity for battle. He quickly rose to the top of his class and became a gifted Sniper. A natural marksman, Shepard combined this with his love for science and medicine, allowing him to act as a frontline soldier, a medic, and in a supporting role. He was called a "one man squad" by his superiors, who quickly recommended him for the N7 Program. Achieving the highest technical scores in the program, Shepard was assigned to an Alliance Frigate.

Upon receiving a distress call from Akuze, Shepard was part of the team sent to investigate. While groundside, his men and him were attacked by Thresher Maws. Shepard witnessed his entire team being horrifically maimed and dissolved by thresher acid, before making it back to the LZ, alone. The experience left his face, and heart scarred. Always being a loner, Shepard now felt his own inner strength was a curse, it afforded him protection, while everyone else around him was destroyed. It drove him further into loneliness and depression. He had grown close to the men in his unit, more so than any other group of people in his life, and losing them haunts him to this day.

Pulling himself out of his stupor, Joshua volunteered to join the Normandy as it's XO, with the new rank of Commander. Feeling lost after Akuze, Shepard remained in the military, hoping to find some meaning in life, or to keep fighting until he finally dropped, whichever came first.

Love Interest: None. Tali.

Roxanne Jane Shepard

Colonist/ Ruthless
Vanguard/ Nemesis/ Assault Rifles

Race: African
Notable Features: Golden Eyes, Black Hair, Minor Facial Scarring

Personality: Roxanne is a natural leader. She’s always been the life of the party, and while not altogether happy about being in the spotlight, she’s comfortable with taking charge of those around her and guiding them. Roxanne is fairly outgoing with most people, and goes out of her way to help those in need. However, she has a dark side, she’s a merciless killer, known to become blood drunk when enraged, and uses her biotics with deadly precision. She believes in channeling this inner rage towards criminals and slavers, who she hates with a passion, and isn’t above using Spectre Status to eliminate criminals she feels are irredeemable. Her friends mean more to her than anything in the world, and as such she will do anything for them, but she doesn’t take betrayal well. Prove innocent in her eyes, she can be your best friend. Prove guilty, she can be your worst nightmare. Politically, she believes humans should have a bigger role in the galaxy, but that doesn’t mean dominating other races, and she finds the Council’s habit of doing this to humanity very irksome.

History: Born on Mindoir, Roxanne had a peaceful childhood. She grew up with friends and family, and was loved by the people around her, though she always felt like she was alone in a crowd, due to her perception of the world and her intelligence. She’s somewhat cynical and a little sarcastic but in adulthood these have served as excellent coping mechanisms. When she was Sixteen, Roxanne’s home world was raided by Batarian slavers, who proceeded to kill and enslave her family and loved ones. Suffering through an artillery strike, Roxanne awoke amidst the screams of those she cared about before being rescued by the Alliance. Having lost everything she once held dear, Roxanne found her inner demon and self determination.

Military Service: Upon turning eighteen, she enlisted in the Marines, and used her rage and grief to give her a strength few could ever hope to achieve. She became a terror on the battlefield, and anyone caught in her way suffered swift oblivion. Soon after enlistment, Roxanne underwent radical biotic grafting, enduring several horrifically painful procedures to obtain an aptitude for biotics that remains unmatched by any human to this day. This, combined with her aptitude with a battle rifle and her complete refusal to die has shaped Shepard into a horror of dark energy and hyper velocity shrapnel. Having found the power to finally take the fight to the slavers, Shepard signed up for the campaign to eliminate the slaver presence in the Skyllian Verge. On Torfan, Roxanne’s rage came out in the form of merciless slaughter. No slaver left the moon alive, as well as the majority of Roxanne’s unit. Her bloodlust sated for now, the grief of loosing her charges only further drove Roxanne down a path of self destruction and pain. Not feeling content with her massacre in the Battle of Torfan, Roxanne signed on as the XO of the Normandy.

Love Interest: Liara. Garrus.

Writing up profiles like that allows me to get into the character's head, and it REALLY makes a difference. It makes them really feel like their own character, as opposed to another random "Shepard".

I can understand those. Council was a military decision, sacrifice the few to ensure the survival of the many, destroy the geth rather than rewrite them which is really no better than indoctrination, and the base IS a valuable asset, but thats prolly the only one a disagree on. The risk of Reaper indoctrination is just too high in my mind.

I prefer in-character writing, mind maps, and character journals.  I gotta get into their heads to understand them, myself.

It's a bit of effort, and something I've only ever done for Mass Effect, but it REALLY breathes life into the story.

That's probably why for all my dozen of playthroughs through ME1 and ME2, there is only one of mine that has a more in depth story to it. The one who makes decisions not because they are decisions I would make, but because it works for that character and provides for the best story, I think. So with that sort of mentality, I did have to think about each decision as they would work to the overall story.

Some people don't like how people treat you on the Citadel if you left the original Council to die. I happen to think it suits the story extremely well.

Now the only way I can direct the conversation back to Tali is probably that main Shepard and her would absolutely be against each other when discussing the Quarian situation. Shepard holds no attachment to a particular place as home, so the yearning for Rannoch by the Quarians is a silly sentiment. I've been working on how the two of them could get along so well given that divide in their opinion.

Well, I suppose one defining characteristic that carries over through all my Shepards is that he'll go above and beyond to help his crew, because he extends a level of protection to anyone on the crew, even if he really doesn't like you much.

Couple Shepards I play don't care much at all for Migrant Fleet politics, so there's a stronger friendship I can play up with Tali as there are other topics they can bond over.

True.  Most Shepards are indeed boring.  That's why I've worked to go a different route.  I want my Shepard to feel like a narrow-minded **** sometimes.  Many Shepards in Tali fics are too goody-goody, for me.  My Shepard is intended to be rough, but good natured.

Though I probably should include a physical description in Grand Escapades so you know you're not dealing with the default face :V
