My biggest complaint about Liara was that she really had nothing to do, she had little drive and ambition, and did not seem to fit in the story.
I do agree to an extent. I'm not sure about "did not seem to fit in the story." Because yea - she lacked conviction. Most of the other squad mates had something they were very vocal and opionated about. Wrex the Krogan, Garrus C-Sec/Red Tape, Ashley aliems (takin 'er jawbs). Liara? Nothing really. Kaidan also didn't really have that much either, although I could say that his willingess to cooperate with aliens may fit the bill.
Her railroad of a romance made it appear that she was supposed to be the romance of the game, which gave me the impression that her entire role in the story was for Shepard to bang her.
I received very little emotional engagement from her romance, and felt somewhat sordid about it because she came off to me as the most immature character in the game. And I mean "immature" in a formal sense, I don't even care how 106 years old is to relative human years, she felt like a child to me, a child who needed someone to watch over her, not fuck her.
My problem with Liara's romance was that it started so soon without any real emotional connection between Shepard and Liara being made. I remember playing the game and thinking "wat" when she asked Shepard if there was anything between them. They
just met.
Also, yea, Liara's inexperience in relationships with people
in general threw me off. You really do have to teach her about relationships in her romance because she has little experience in the real world, and was a recluse.
This Shadowbroker story really improved her as a character to me. Liara is actually doing something for the story, she even recovered Shepard's body while on her vendetta. The new Liara actually gets things done.
This is why I really want to help her now, Liara's all grown up and she means business.
I agree. The new Liara is better as a character.
