Darker games aren't made for general audiences. And it's very easy to ***** the pooch and ruin the game by overdoing it.

Indeed, that's why I said if Mass Effect were darker.
And indeed, it could easily be screwed up, but with the proper writing (and BioWare tends to deliver on that front) it could be executed extremely well.
(As a side note, of course the deed would not be shown, merely implied, the effects it would have on her afterwards would be extensively elaborated, though)

Rape is such a touchy subject.  It'd be very hard to implement in a game, where the protagonist is the rapist.

I realize you're talking about a game, and I realize that the subject is brought up time and again in other media, hell, it's implied that Jack was raped in ME2.    However, I cannot see it as a good idea that the protagonist is the one "doing the deed."

My wife was raped before we met, and I've seen the damage it can do.  If what you suggest is ever implemented, in any game, I'll not buy it.

There is attempted rape in ME2, but not of the violent variety. Morinth takes away her victim's ability to consent and makes them want it.

Nothing important. Have a Repostan instead!
----------------------

Warmth.  She was warm. For the first time since she put on her suit, the young engineer was warm.

Tali could only let out a moan of contentment; she was so deliciously warm.  She curled further into the side she was pressed against.  The one thing she had not expected from joining with Shepard was how much the engineer would enjoy the extra heat. She had known he would be warm, of course.

Mordin had been very attentive to details when he discussed the differences between quarians and humans.  Humans had a significantly higher body temperature than any known species other than vorcha; he had sought only to warn Tali about it.  The salarian was surprised by her enthusiastic reaction to this information.

To say she was pleased with this information was an understatement.  The suit's controlled environment matched her natural body temperature almost exactly.  She was always comfortable.   However, only extreme temperatures  would register to her; Noveria being a prime example.

But here, wrapped in his arms, she was warm.  It radiated off of her human delightfully, and warmed Tali down to her bones.  Still, it was nothing compared to the heat she felt when they were actually joined.  It was enough, for now though.  She sighed again in contentment.

"Everything OK, Tali?"  Shepard asked softly.  Pleasure and desire threaded through his voice, and it made her shiver.

She nuzzled his neck and replied, "I'm perfect, John."  So content was she that her voice nearly vibrated her pleasure.

"Hmmmm," Shepard rumbled.  Unconsciously, Tali began to responded with a similar sound.

That caught the biotic's attention.  A pleasant surprise all told.  He hummed in his throat again, and the purring from his partner increased.  He chuckled softly.

"I didn't know you could purr Tali," he said fondly.

Tali started.  She was purring?  But that only happened between mates...Mates.  She liked the though of that.    But her thoughts were brought up short; what if Shepard didn't like it.

"Does it, bother you?"  She asked timidly.

The commander shook his head.  "Not at all.  It's actually very soothing."

The purring started up again.  "Good to know Captain," she trilled.

They lay there for a few minutes.  Finally, Tali hummed out, "I wish we could stay like this forever."

Shepard smiled.  "That can be arranged you know," he said.

Tali looked up into his eyes.  "Do you mean that?"

"Yes," he answered.  "I love you Tali.  i have every intention of being with you for as long as you'll have me."

"Always," she whispered.

"That sounds like a plan," he responded just as softly.

She smiled and kissed his neck.  "What are you proposing, Captain?"

John kissed the top of her head.  "Once we get a little more settled, you'll find out, I promise," he murmured with a grin.

Shepard tightened his embrace, pulling Tali flush against him.  She responded eagerly.  "The sooner, the better," she said softly before she kissed him on the lips.  Soon, the kiss intensified, and they lost themselves in each other.

I think the more appropriate question would be:

"What did I just step onto?"

Discussion isn't on a very high ground right now.

Perfectly understandable, but you do realise what emotions this might provoke for the person playing the "protagonist", no?
It's been done before in movies and books, where a "protagonist" rapes another character (Watchmen, for example), but the fact that -you- are the one willingly putting another person through this (though some might consider her "evil") is on a whole new level.
Yes, there would be plenty that would do this for "teh lulz", plenty that would be disgusted, but it could be an incredible feat of story telling, especially for those who have immersed themselves enough.

But I'm probably putting far too much thought into this for my own good, we have not reached this point in gaming, not by a long shot.

And though I am mere letters on a monitor, my sincere apologies if this offends you, and I'm sorry for your wife.

I'm disappointed.

Let's backtrack a few pages to when things were just a little brighter.

*Shepard and Tali lay together entangled in the soft sheets of the Cabin's bed, savoring the rare moments that Tali is free of her suit. Shepard had commited her face to memory after their time together before the Omega 4 Relay, but it was entirely different to see it with his own eyes and to feel her breath on his skin as they laid together. Gripped by a sudden desire, Shepard leans forward and delivers a peck of a kiss on her nose. Tali giggles at the gesture.*

Tali: What was that for?

Shepard: I love your nose...

*Shepard leans forward again, planting another soft kiss on her cheek before moving down to her lips.*

Shepard: And your cheeks, and your lips..

*Shepard's lips drift past her chin and move further down her neck, whispering as he moves.*

Shepard: And your chin, and your neck...

*Shepard's kisses move lower and lower down the silken smooth flesh of Tali's body.*

Tali: Shepard...? What are y- Oh! Oooh... Keelah...

I disagree.  Jack mentions something about being used by the people who found her after she escaped.  That implies rape, even if it's not mentioned explicitly.

Rape can be a powerful plot device, showing the evilness of an enemy, or how uncaring the universe is, how dangerous life can be, but only if done right.  Having the protagonist be the rapist, however, is completely...well, just wrong.  Rape is one of the worst things that can be done to a person, and I for one would never want to be even give the option to do that to someone, even in a "game."

Very well, let's just drop the subject, drop it like a flaming anvil.

It's an hour before they hit the Omega 4 Relay, and there are still many preparations to be done, so Tali's decided she should put her suit back on.
Shepard: Mind if I help you with that?

Tali: Oh, ehh, no.

Shepard: Why not, you didn't mind me helping you take it off...

Tali: It's just, I'd rather not have you be the one to put me back in this... Prison...

Shepard: Oh, is that so? But I'll make it worth your while!

Tali: How?

Shepard: I'll kiss every part of your body before you cover it up...

Tali, noticeably blushing: Oh, uhm. Keelah.

Tali, suddenly slightly sultry: Did I ever tell you, you have the best ideas?
-And so it begins, Tali occasionally dropping a piece of her suit she'd just put on, so Shepard would have to perform his duty again.

I've always liked the idea of Xen having biotics. Probably because Morrigan was a magician... she just seems like the type who'd be willing to undergo risky surgery for more power. She'd be like a quarian sentinel. Make for a good boss fight.

If I were pitched in a battle against a boss Daro, I'd still wreck her.

I realize that it would be a highly emotionally charged moment in game.  And I realize that protagonists in movies, and other media, have been rapists, but the difference you point out is the difference that makes it a disturbing thought.  Watching a movie, reading a book, those are set at one remove.  I can feel disgust towards a rapist, protagonist or not.  If you, as the gamer, were the one choosing to rape another being, that's too close.

Rape is a hateful thing.  It destroys lives, completely literally.  Many women (and many men who've been raped too, btw) never recover from the act.  Rape is literally one of the worst things a person can do.  In many ways, I almost think it's less cruel than murder, with the exception of the ones who can recover and lead relatively normal lives.

Because of a long story that I will not relate here, because I'm not looking for drama, I am a sufferer of PTSD.  My experiences have taught me what a traumatic event can do to a person, and my trauma wasn't even directed personally towards me.  I cannot even imagine what something as traumatic as rape would do to a person.

Oh, and don't worry, I feel no anger towards you whatsoever.  I realize that you're looking at this from a storytelling perspective, and from that perspective, I'd almost agree with you.  However, this is too personal for me to compartmentalize this like that, so I'll say it one last time, then I'm done.

DO NOT WANT.
