Ok, I'm running an AMD Athlon X2 Dual Core Processor 3600+ running at 1.99 GHz.
I have 1.5 GB of RAM, an Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT.
I'm using Windows XP Home Edition, Service pack 3,
DirectX 9.0c (Mar 09 or later)
Basically, my problems started when my OS had a hiccup, and I had to do a system restore (resets WinXP to factory condition.)
I re-downloaded all of the Windows updates, and reinstalled Service Pack 3, but ME2 will not start. I get the Mass Effect launcher screen, where I can get to the configuration tool, but when I try to play the game, it will not start.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled ME2 to see if this would fix the problem, but that hasn't worked. I actually reinstalled ME2 before reinstalling SP3 (because I forgot that SP3 was required) but I don't think that would cause the problem.
Should I uninstall/reinstall ME2 again now that SP3 has been installed? Or does anyone else have any ideas what I should do?
Thanks in advance for any answers you might have.

UPDATE: Uninstalling/reinstalling Mass Effect 2 (with SP3 installed) does not solve the problem.
What's wrong with my system that ME2 will not play? Anyone have an idea?

just a bump to see if anyone has any answers, plus an update with more information.
I did a complete HD wipe, reinstalled WinXP, downloaded all of the various updates (including Service Pack 3), updated my video/sound drivers, and even bought/installed a new anti-virus just in case it was malware causing the issue.
I'm still running with an AMD Athlon X2 dual core processor (1.99GHz), a NVidia GeForce 8600GT with the newest drivers, 1.5 Gig of ram. I ran ME2 quite well on this exact same machine just last week, but ever since I had to do the original PC recovery, ME2 will not play. The game launcher will start, I can enter the configuration utility, all of the other buttons on the launch screen work as intended, but when I click play, all that happens is that I get the "ding" that confirms I clicked it, but then...nothing. No error message, no computer slowdown, my system absolutely does not react to the fact that I just tried to start a game. Just the "ding."
As a side note, ME1 did the same thing before this latest HD format/OS reinstall. I have yet to reinstall ME1 and try it again since the reinstall, but I'm guessing it'll do the same as ME2, since 2 has the same problems still.
If there's ANYONE who has seen this problem, or has better knowledge of how computers work than I do, please help me out. I've emailed EA support with the issue, but no answer as of yet. Thanks.

If your coalesced.ini file is not good (borked) the game launcher will run but the game will not launch - just as you've described. Find the coalesced.ini file in the
"../Mass Effect 2/BioGame/Config/PC/Cooked" folder.
Have you modified that file? Or replaced it with a downloaded pre-modified file?

Just for $h!ts and giggles, I tried something on the EA support site, and it asked me to download a .Net framework or something...so I did. Dunno why, but after I downloaded that, I tried running the game again, one last chance before I gave up for the night and went to bed, and suddenly the game works. Does anyone know if ME2 requires a certain version of the .Net framework or something? Because that's the only thing I did, and I didn't even restart the computer to finish the reinstall...
Honestly I'm completely confused here, but the game is now running. I just hope it keeps running
Edit: Oh, and no, I didn't have an edited coalesced.ini file, it was a virgin install, no DLC, nothing.

Hey i'm having the same exact problem. was there a specific .Net framework that you had to download?

just make sure you have the latest... run windows update and make sure netframework is selected.... unless of course you have win7 64 then you may have a problem when you update to the latest.....
