So after following what information I could find on lighting, and setting up a scene as described in this thread, my lighting still isn't working successfully.  I would have posted this issue in that thread, but I'd like to try and keep that devoted to general lighting issues rather than my specific problem.

The issue can be seen clearly from the two screenshots in the picture below:

The only thing that has moved between taking the two shots is the camera.  The side of the character facing the sunlight is lit, but the part in shadow is pitch black (minus a specular reflection or two).  I've got an ambient light, I've got baked lights for illuminating the area, a light probe, and three static lights to provide character illumination (pulled directly from lak300d, I might add).

If anyone can provide any advice on what might be causing this issue, I would sincerely appreciate it.

Have you tried raising the light in question up high above the level, so that it's shining down on the player, rather than across at them? I had the same problem, and trying that meant that the player no longer had a 'shadow' side.

I'm not sure which light you're referring to. The light providing this illumination is from the sunlight set in the area export properties. The ambient light is placed in a somewhat central location, and no matter where the player is in relation to that light, the issue still occurs. Finally, the three static lights are positioned around the terrain mesh on different sides - and yes, their radius covers the terrain mesh.

This may be a basic question but have you rendered your light probes?

What is the angle of your sunlight in the area properties? If it is at a sharp angle rather than more up and down, I think this can happen.

If one light is very much stronger than the others, it can have this effect.

Thanks for all the suggestions... I'll run through what I've done.

1) I tried adjusting my sunlight up so that the direction is -0.900119,0.351038,-0.607992.  This is fairly high in the sky.
2) Checked the ambient light - it's set to 0.02,0.07,0.14 with an intensity of .75.
3) Checked my 3 static lights pulled from lak300d. They've still got the same light settings as that layout, and envelop the terrain mesh. I even increased their radius to 650 to make doubly certain. They are set to affect characters and not the level.
4) I recalculated pathfinding, lighting, light probe, did post all locals.  Then I went to my area, loaded another layout, then reloaded my exported layout.  I exported the entire standalone project without dependencies, then went into the game.

Even despite all that, I've still got the same issue. I'm getting to the point where I'm willing to upload the lvl file somewhere so people can download and have a look at it to see if anyone can identify where I might be going wrong. I can't see any reason (based on the information I've been able to find) that was cause this problem.

It is a bug with the lightmapper not what light types you use. Follow the steps to "post a water mesh from single player". This will fix the problem. There are a few forum discussions on this but I can not find them to link.

I will look around later in the day and see if I can find more information.

FlyingDonkey: Thank you very much! I had not been posting from single player because I had no water in my level, and I had not read anything to indicate that the bug also affected sunlight/shadow.

I guess my take-home lesson is: Always do level posts from single player.

I looked around again for the thread that went into this in depth and could not find it. I KNOW IT IS ON HERE! Anyway, glad I could help. This was my first toolset problem I encountered that really annoyed me.

I know this is really late, but have you set your static light's "Affects Characters" property to TRUE?

EDIT - Sorry, just realized you already did this.

Seems like you're talking about this one

EDIT:So did this actually fix the problem for you? I've been running into the same issue but posting from single player doesn't seem to fix it.
EDIT2: Ah, got it to work.
