I got the Oblivion GOY edition as a gift, but never even loaded it.  Is it worth playing?

Emphatically yes... although I have NEVER done the main quest, I do everything else... the world is huge and I love exploring and finding new things (If you played Fallout 3 you know how big Bethesda makes there games... I'm pretty sure oblivion is bigger, but I can't remember)

And I'll need to get a patch for it to avoid memory issues?  I'm running WIn 7x64.

I really enjoyed Oblivion for the 360 (pc can't run squat)

I never finished the main campaign, but I had alot of fun with it. I especially liked how I got rewarded for sneaking or running, made me feel like I wasn't wasting my time dungeon crawling

My brother in law keeps trying to get me to play oblivion for the 360. I keep refusing. I love rpg games, but I know how open world it is and how buggy, the two combined are just enough for me not to want to try. On their own I'd not mind either issue though. Open world games have their advantages, but like others said it's too easy to get lost in the game and lose interest.

I first played it on 360 before getting the PC version, and I thoroughly enjoyed the game, even with the bugs. The only problem is leveling up, that takes so freakin long

depends your major skill choices I could reach 20 in about 2 hours with right skills

As for glitchs duplication glitch anyone and permanent enchantment bug?

Fallout 3 takes forever to level up when you pass 12

Actually Fallout 3 is completely flawed, I played on the hardest difficulty and was level 12 before I even got to the Radio station and I did limited quests... the harder the difficulty the more xp = faster leveling, and the game isn't much harder on the higher difficulties it just takes more strategy

I know I'd enjoy it too, but I also know it's the type of game I have to stay away from unless I'm prepared to sink massive amounts of time (which I don't mind usually, but with a job and a wife to keep happy etc it's hard to sink massive amounts of time into anything anymore).

Seems like my PC would be great at handling it though, since I have a 64 bit system that kicks ass. Now if only I could afford to switch out vista :P

Don't get your hopes up, it runs averagely even on the best of systems. I loled when my friend tried to play on max with his 5850 and was still dropping to like 30fps in some situations.

I get 60 to 70 fps on my system....for Oblivion, except in town,
then it drops to 50 fps.

First of all, that game is NOT really that buggy...
Second of all, PC>Xbox for that game. Mods and patches (official AND unofficial) FTW.

Just get the unofficial patch from tesnexus, it fixes most of the bugs. I can assure you it works fine on Win 7 HP X64, as that's what I run.

No... it's useful if you plan on running a bunch of mods as it increases the maximum memory that it will support, by default it can only support 2 gbs and will CTD if it ever uses more than that... with the 64 version there is an application that you can use to allow it to use up to 4 gbs instead

Yeah, sounds about right. The game can't seem to run much faster than that. The only reason he was getting drops to 30 was because he was trying to use some ridiculous view distance mod, thinking he could handle it no problem. I'm like, no lol

Do you remember what this application is called, or does it come with the game?
