I have dwindling confidence - I'm mostly hoping against hope that someone with more tokens than me (and I assume they must exist) will not be looking when one of the PCs comes up...

Do they hold sentimental value? Definitely. They're collector's items, but not valuable.

Autographed genre fiction will never make it into high monetary value, except in very rare cases. And, unfortunately, those cases are how you described them - based on fame rather than the narrative, but it's fame based on pop culture. Autographed Harry Potter books? Score. Autographed Twilight ****? Score. Autographed George R. R. Martin literature? Less so, but probably still a little score (although it'd probably read, "To so-and-so, quit your ****ing please"). Most other writers of genre literature? No chance.

Heck, even signed literary fiction isn't a big deal.
