So... are the higher prices due to inflation, or is this just when the auctions are the busiest? I'm thinking about getting on around 6am EST and I'm wondering if it's worth it...
6am is decent; I've been on around that time for the past couple of days. Right now we're still in prime time.

The reason most consumer drives don't go higher than 2TB is due to the fact that it becomes unstable quickly. The more space they try to cram into an HDD, the less reliable it becomes. Hell I won't touch anything over a 1TB for the reliability issues.
The actual issue had more to do with platter density issues and manufacturing cost. Platters can only hold so much data, and if you have more than 4 the costs start getting really prohibitive (And I suppose it's also at least somewhat more likely to fail). As I last heard, Hitachi was trying to develop a different type of platter that could hold more data on with the same surface area. So we'll see in the next few years.

Well it is around 11:30PM EST which could be considered late to some but that means it is only 9:30 PST which could still be considered prime time.
I'm still holding out for tonight.

There's no consumer drives that have a higher density than 2TB as far as I'm aware. I believe Hitachi started working on that technology last year, but I haven't heard anything about it. The world is moving towards SSD's anyway. Those are far more expensive for far less space (256GB runs for about $400).
Solid state? Hope work on the security problem for that.
What security problem? They're just as "secure" as any normal hard drive (Aka not secure at all unelss you use software to encrypt them).
From what I heard the amount of wearing will affect the encryption on it, and they have a tendence to wear faster as well.
