1) People are actively networking and together are making sure each gets several thousand additional tokens via the visit my URL and get one token for each unique visitor deal
OR
2) People are somehow gaming the system using the same method
Regardless, there's no way my paltry 7020 tokens will win even a single auction.

Not true. I did almost every challenge and won only two. I think what's happening is people are getting thousands of clicks on their custom URLs, and that's why some have so many points.
