I have played through both Mass Effect games twice now and decided I'm ready for the challenge a hardcore playthrough represents.  I was wondering however, if it is possible to load up a previously played character and get the Hardcore achievement.  I'm playing the XBOX 360 version and when I load a previous identity it doesn't give me the choice to select my difficulty before beginning, so if I choose as soon as I can in the game (after the two dialogue choices with Joker at the very beginning) is that soon enough?  Or do I have to start a raw character?  Thanks for the help.

as far as i know you can change it as soon as you start after joker, think it has no effect after you land on eden prime, thats what i did for my insanity playthrough. Though in ME1 the harder difficulty settings just means the enemies spam the immunity ability, which can get really annoying.

Did you get the insanity achievement for doing it that way?

you can change the difficulty of the game anytime before you finish eden prime, so yes

And also, don't change it at all after you finish Eden Prime because it won't count!
