Just curious here ... how many of you have read either prequel novel? If you have, what did you think? I am considering ordering just to get a sense of the backstory and lore of the world.
Thanks!

The Stolen Throne and The Calling were good reads, although the Stolen Throne feels a bit like a first novel.
There are some things that the books don't resolve, but that's only because they're setting up the plot points I assume we'll be encountering when we play the game. I don't think the books will be absolutely necessary to understand those plot points, but you'll know what to expect.
In addition setting up the world and giving you a feel for it, you'll also get a lot of backstory on Duncan and Loghain.

I've only read Dragon Age: The Stolen Throne, but it's an obvious 'first novel.' I wouldn't recommend it.

I have read both. The Stolen Throne does indeed read like a first novel (as it is one), and is probably more like a published fanfic, however good of one. It has my favorite character in the series it in, and it does have some wonderful character development. It's 400 pages, so it's a quick read, and you get a better sense of Fereldan's place in Thedas.
The Calling was utterly fantastic, it was a much better read than TST, to me, there is less character development, but more characters to learn about. I cried twice, one just sobbing, the other was complete and utter bawling, for a half hour. You learn a lot about the Grey Wardens, the blight, and the Darkspawn. If you're just getting one, I would suggest the Calling due to it being more closing intertwined with the game.

I ended up ordering both ... sounds like I should start with The Calling, eh? By the time I finish it, DA will be out, so I may have to leave The Stolen Throne for later.
Thanks all.
Thanks all.

The Calling massively spoils something from The Stolen Throne, so if you want to be spoiler free, I'd recommend reading in order.

I agree, although The Calling is a much better read, i would recommend starting with The Stolen Throne.

The Calling is better written, but also spoilers things somewhat -- not really big plot twists (though there's a massive foreshadow of a companion's likely plot), but you find out lots of things your character won't necessarily know until later in the game. I would actually consider just reading The Stolen Throne, which fills you in pretty well about the local political history. (The Calling is pretty much all about Darkspawn/Grey Warden stuff.)
