Here's the situation I ran into with my 360 regarding my encouter of the disc unreadable error and how I solved it.

I own an XBOX 360 Elite 120 GB hard drive and have a gold membership and have downloaded all in game content available so far minus one Dr. Pepper promo and have had Mass Effect 2 since day one.

I had installed both discs to the hard drive after a week or so after game came out to help speed up load times.  No issues occured during instal or afterwards relating to install.  You still have to swap discs though.  ME2 played fine until until last about 2 weeks ago.  Game froze in the middle of a conversation with Kelly.  Restarted Xbox.  Xbox logo spun up and froze after a second or so.  Repeated multiple times, same symptoms.

Removed hard drive and started my 360 up.  3 red displayed, I.E. Red Ring Of Death.  I don't belive ME2 caused this, merely that it was my Xbox's time to go to that big junkpile in the sky.  I boworred an 360 belonging to a friend in the mean time and attached the hard drive.  The game played fine, with about the same load times roughly.  However, when I reached a "bottle neck" point where you are required to swap out disc 1 for 2 or vice versa I recieved a disc read EVER TIME I put the disc in the tray and the Xbox tried to read it.  I just had to restart the console though, and the game worked fine form then on.  Unfortunately if I didn't save my game or the autosave didn't kick in, I had to replay from last save.

I assumed this was a problem with my friend's Xbox's drive and shouldn't be concerned.  I told him but continued to play.  I later got a replacement xbox about 1 week later, and swapped my hard drive out to my replacement unit microsoft had given me.  I STILL had the issue.

Now, I know the 360 has issues, but I wasn't about to look at an Xbox JUST REPAIRED as broken.  :-P

I redownloaded / verified all my DLC as the notice in the mail told me to do (for DRM reasons).  This got me thinking, could having swapped out my hard drive have messed up the install files since it's a different Xbox?

I deleted the game install files from disc 1 and 2, NOT the game saves and DLC though.  Reinstalled both discs again.  Game works fine.

So buttom line: try deleting from Hard Drive and reinstalling.

I hope this helps some folks!
