Bioware absolutely blew me away with Dragon Age: Origins, I
was seriously hyped for this game, and some how it managed to far surpass what
I was hoping for.  I play crpgs for the story, and for making a character
in the story, and I just felt like posting a few things I felt, in my
first play through, really stood out and amazed me as just amazing atmospheric
story bits. I enjoyed everything I experienced in game, but just these
especially just, blew me away in my first play through.

These are in no particular order, with exception to the last one being the one
that was my favorite,

1. Duncan: For such the short time he is in the game, and the limited role as
your introduction to the Grey Wardens, Duncan had such an underlying depth to
him, it was obvious he has seen and done more than you could ever hear about,
well beyond what is mentioned in 'The Calling' and the game itself. I found him
to be such an alluring character, despite not intending to rp him that way, my
mage at first meeting of him found himself rambling off questions just because
he was so bloody interesting, even about things I knew all about from following
the game and the books for the past long while. He was an amazing mentor figure
for about the 30 minutes of game play he was alive and actively our mentor and
I wish we could have had more time with him.

2. Alistair: From the moment I met him in game, it felt like I had known him
for years. He was almost everything you could want in a friend, and he almost
never left my party because his writing really made me feel kinship with him,
not only because he and my character were the last two Grey Wardens, but
because also, despite his very friendly demeanor, there seemed to be a subtle
hinting that your quite possibly the only friend he had left. I literally felt
sorry for him every time Duncan would come up in conversation, he was so believably
vulnerable when it came to that subject, it really just, solidified him as one
of my favorite npc's in any game. It really pained me when I had to watch him
leave after letting a certain someone live, so without further adeu....

3. Loghain: Before reading the stolen throne, what little we had seen of
Loghain in the tower of ishal game play demo made me think he was just a stereo
typical jerk. After reading it however, I became a huge Loghain fan boy, he was
abrasive, and was not good with people, but he had such a deep love for lord
and country, he was even willing to hurt that lord to try to make him a more
effective ruler. Even back then, it was clear he had issues with paranoia, and
when I first met him outside his tent in game at Ostagar, the dark rings around
his eyes and the tiredness in his voice really got me feeling that he was
struggling with a lot of things mentally.  Every time he would tell people
to 'focus on reality' and 'attend to reality' and to stop being obsessed with
tales and legends, I really got the feeling that maybe his choice of words was
influenced by a bit of sanity left in him, like maybe at the same time, he was
pleading with himself to try to get past his delusions, even if he did not
quite realize it himself. The way he got mad whenever someone would question
him, his facial expressions when Howe would give him more bad news on the civil
war, he looked like he was so burdened with guilt and doubt he was about to
breakdown then and there. I couldn't not spare him at the Landsmeet, he
realized what he was doing was wrong in the end, all of it, he was just a soul
too loyal to his country to see that delusions and paranoia were replacing his
rational thoughts, no doubt aided by...

4. Arl Howe: I just wanted to make the note that, despite maybe having a grand
total of 20 minutes on screen time (depending on how long your fight with him
takes), you can really get the feeling that it is him, not Loghain, who is the
true instigator of this civil war. It really surprised me how easily I could
see (whether intended or not, haha) in one scene were Loghain refuses to
listen to Howe trying to explain if the civil war continues, they won't be able
to beat the Blight, the terror in Howe's face and voice that the monster he had
created in Loghain (I got the feeling Howe heavily influenced Loghains
increasing paranoia) was no longer in his control. He had probably the most
profound and true to character last words I have ever heard. "I deserved
more than this."

Last, my favorite story bit in game;

5. Morrigan: Anyone who recognizes me from the old forums can probably relate
that the issue of who to romance first, Morrigan or Leliana, I had flip flopped
on constantly, however, once in game, after the initial scenes with Morrigan, I
knew who I had to go with first. She was so...different than most everything
had kind of hinted at her being, and yet the same.  I am one of the
biggest hopeless romantics out there, and so the effort to try to convince
Morrigan to treat the relationship as more than a fling was wonderful, and the
way she grew more and more uncomfortable as she got feelings for my character
really struck me, I had thought simply Flemeth had poisoned her mind against
love, and while that may be partly true, it could not have prepared me for the
reveal at the end.

I could not help feeling hurt and betrayed when I found out the romance was all
so she could have some god child (It would be funny if the Archdemons aren't
actually old gods, and that this plan was all for not).  However, I was
heart warmed when she said that she did not regret any of the feelings she
developed. I pleaded as much as possible for her to stay, even in the middle of
attack Fort Drakon, I begged her, and I had such hope that in a truly touching
moment she would decide to stay...and then she didn't. I can honestly admit I was
heartbroken, the relationship meant a lot for me because it meant a lot for my
character, whom I wanted to have a happy ending. I immediately told
Anora I would search out Morrigan, hoping that I would get some note that my
character eventually found her...but no...even more heart-wrenchingly, I got a
note mentioning that on one night, my character could feel the sadness and
regret Morrigan felt. I cannot help but hope that the fact she felt those
things would mean she would let herself be found by the Warden one day. I wish
she could have at least said WHY she needed to raise the child alone, without
the Warden, Flemeth was gone after all, she was free...or maybe she
wasn't.  I cannot help but feel that maybe Flemeth's plan was for Morrigan
to get the book all along, and the Robes of Possession anyone? I think Flemeth
may have been influencing her still in her mind, and that the god child was
intended to be Flemeth's new host.

Anyways, I really hope we can get some closure on what was going on with
Morrigan in the future, I did tear up at that, it was really painful to my
"love conquers all!" idealistic heart, and I can't help but hope that
one day the Warden and Morrigan find each other and get to be a couple.

Sorry for the giant wall of text, I just felt like sharing some thoughts on why
this game has just impressed me to no end, can't wait for my second
playthrough! (I have to recover from my first play through ending
first...)

Forgot to add this: What are your favorite parts of the story/characters in Dragon Age? Or if your a developer and feel like commenting on any of my random theories musings above, that's dandy too.

On Morrigan: She not only has a god-child, but also Flemeth's grimoires. Who knows what sort of madness she plans - perhaps she'll try to possess her child so she can get godlike powers...
