So I've finished one and a half playthroughs with no crashes at all.  Then one day (1) I download and briefly use Second Life for a school assignment and (2) a large new automatic update to my McAfee security software (free through AT&T DSL) downloads, requiring a restart.  Every time I've tried to start ME2 since then, it freezes instantly on the "Press Any Key" screen, with the sound stuttering, and I have to use the power button to force a shutdown.  I play through Steam, and have all their updates.  My computer is well below minimum specs, so much so that I should thank my lucky stars I was able to play the game at all (hey, tough times for PS3 owners who don't game on computers much), but the fact that I've played like 30 - 40 hours with minimal lagging issues and zero crashes suggests the specs aren't the problem.  Anyway, my basic specs are:  3 ghz single core, 1 gb ram (I know!!), win xp sp3, nvidia geforce 7600 gs.  I always run Gamebooster when I play.  The Second Life installation and McAfee update may have nothing to do with this, but that would be awfully coincidental timing.  Here is a quick list of fixes I've tried:  (1) Uninstalling Second Life (still uninstalled); (2) starting ME2 with all active McAfee firewalls and virusscans disabled; (3) deleting my save files from the bioware folder, in case a corrupt save was causing the problem; (4) uninstalling/reinstalling ME2; (5) uninstalling Steam itself, then reinstalling it and ME2; (6) resetting the video settings in the ME2 launcher based on a system scan (low 800 x 600 res); (7) reinstalling updated video drivers; and (8) starting in windowed mode.  And probably some other things I can't remember now.

Any help would be appreciated.  I've run a bajillion searches for known issues with the Mcafee updates or Second Life, and haven't found anything helpful.  I'd like to play the new content, and I've seen this crap computer play ME2 successfully for hours on end.  Thanks.

Other attempted fixes: I've also verified the integrity of the game cache and defragmented the cache files through Steam.

Just wanted to post the solution, in case anybody ever finds this post in a search about screen freezes requiring reboots. The culprit was actually two blown capacitors on my video card. I figured it out today when I heard a loud bang that I thought was a rock thrown against my window. The window had nary a scratch, though, and soon afterwards the computer screen started freezing every few minutes on ANY applications, not just 3D ones. I cracked open the comp and saw that three of the capacitors (the big silver cylindrical protuberances) on the video card had blown up. It's really easy to tell, because normal capacitors will have a smooth, flat top, while blown ones are uneven with a tear in the surface. The one which had just blown was slightly wet at the point of the tear (don't know what it is or why).

Anyway, the point is that when you start getting screen freezes during games, check to see if the capacitors on your video card have blown. It will make a really loud sound, but because it is so unfamiliar you might have passed it off as something happening outside. Apparently the video card can function with a blown capacitor or two, but if it happens once it's likely to keep happening until you lose serious functionality.
