I was entusiastic about this bioware auction.  I own titles as far back (for me) as Baldur's Gate up to Mass Effect 2.  I have registered all my games and got my few tokens.  Ha, I even downloaded the Dragon Age Character Builder for a few more points, even though that program was released as a promo video really.  So I sat happy with my 5950 points, thinking I was going to have a shot at atleast some fun.

What this auction has turned into is a social networking "who can get the most people to click my link" contest, which even spoiled the Official Auction Thread - turning it from "hey guys, good luck, let's have some fun" to "WTF!?! 14k tokens? I ain't going to win ****! Here, Click my link so I can stand a chance to bid!"  I don't know about you, but that kind of defeats the purpose, does it not?

You see, I could get past this if the auction were even the SLIGHTEST bit fun.  The first auction went reasonably well, with at least a decent progression in bids; however, from there, all hell broke loose. The second bid went from 10 to 1000 to 6690 in three bids that took a whopping 14 seconds, 8 seconds later it was over 9,000.  Now, you can't even refresh a page long enough before it's over the casual title-owner's limit.

So my questions are these:

A: Is this even fun?
B: How is this rewarding the many loyal Bioware title fans
C: Why the hell are people bidding every token to start the auction?
D: Was this event actually planned out? If so, I would hope there is a marketing employment vacancy soon.
E: Is it possible to actually fix this before it get so FUBAR'd that people lose interest alltogether.

If the Mods are capable of sifting through the link-spam that has become of the "Official Auction Thread" and pulling out many novel suggestions and even half-assed attempting to implement them, that would be A+.  I mean, hell, they realized we couldn't tell if that was an image of a HDD on a T-Shirt, or a T-Shirt and a HDD.

So, let this rant die, or do something with it, IDC.  I just think this was a great event poorly planned and it pissed off a lot of people with the expectation of having a bit of fun.

I agree, maybe the big problem is that they only have one auction at a time, so everyone gets desperate and puts all their marbles in one basket I guess you could say. If they had a lot of auctions, well a few, not a lot. A person wont be able to bid on every single thing with every single token in every single auction. I was hopeful too and but I'm not giving up just yet.

A. Not yet, but I think things will cool down somewhat.

B. They're giving a lot of stuff away to a lot of people.

C. Because they don't know how to ninja the auction/auctions are only up for 15 minutes.

D. Of course it was planned out, they had the whole countdown to get it ready :)

E. I don't really want to think of an answer for this.

It's to early to tell. It's only the first day.

Yeah I agree with astraeos; in a day or two the bidding should decrease and will probably make it a little easier to win something. If not, then I don't know.

I'm hoping out with you two as well.  But it only strikes me in the back of the mind that the potential for change is minimal. With all the link-spamming, those of us who continue to look for a chance to bid, while clicking and begging for clicks, are all increasing at the same rate - while those who have the tokens that are damning us from bidding are as well increasing their token counts...

Call me a pessimist, but I'm not holding my breath.

C: By now we have to assume that almost no one has enough points for two auction wins.  Not much reason to hold back(not like the points have value).

Then it's not quite an auction, is it? More of a "HA! I win" ;)

Yeah, everyone who isn't winning is increasing in tokens at the same level... It will ultimately be a flop...*sigh

Well intentioned but misguided effort. It definitely doesn't cater to actual BioWare fans but rather the "social networking" fans. Maybe it's a generational thing, but I can't stand the whole Twitter/Facebook, click my link garbage.

I was a fan of the concept, but not the implementation.

I agree that the referral link mechanic essentially ruined the auctions. However, there did need to be some method of earning tokens besides the Twitter challenges.

I'm at a loss for a practical substitute.

Big win for facebook/twitter fanboys. Epic fail for Bioware fans.

I'm not buying another Bioware game ever.

Edit:  I also think it's great that you don't even have to buy a Bioware game to partake in this.  Seems like mass Facebook spam is what won the prizes.  Garbage.Posted Image

Now that's just being silly.  A true BioWare fan could give a crap about the auction.  All we really care about are the games!

Yes,

I support AshedMan. This uber fail of an auction does not take away from the entertainment and content that is in the games that 'inspired' this auction. It would be a shame to let something as trivial as this keep you from playing a game that would be a classic because BioWare is more than capable of producing more games of that caliber.

The main reason people are bidding all their tokens at once is these are all free tokens, there is no reason to horde them when they will be useless after the auctions are over, the limit is two wins for auctions, but I doubt anyone will get that, if you are going to bid on something, then you just use all your tokens since having just a few thousand will be pointless.

At least they did something.  Plus unless I'm wrong this is supposed to be a year long celebration, so they might give some more suff away.  It doesn't really make sense to say you won't buy one of their games because you don't like the way they're giving stuff away.
