I'm quite shocked at the amount of people who believe Garrus is the best choice as your number 2. Lets look at his record, anyone he ever lead is dead !

because a betrayal (Sidonis).
Just like everybody in the Lazarus project space station (except for herself and Jacob) is dead because of a betrayal (Wilson).

Garrus, since Kaidan wasn't a squadmate. It would be Kaidan otherwise.

Miranda got Jacob and Shephard out. Garrus can't even take care of himself

Okay well, we'll have to disagree since he managed to save the majority of the crew (the Normandy was utterly doomed) but fair enough.

but he didn't save the crew! the only thing he did, that could be considered an effort to save the crew (apart from the beacon), was push the abandon ship button, after about 20-30 seconds of chatting with ashley/kaiden/liara, and putting out irrelevant fires.

and i'm guessing theres a time lapse somewhere there, because we never even see shepard get told whats going on. If you look at exactly what were given, from shepards point of view crap just starts explodin, so he launches a distress beacon, he doesn't try to find out whats going on.

Without a beacon no rescue ships show up to pick escape pods.

And it was quite obvious to somebody who was not even on the bridge what was occuring. The ship suddenly rocks repeatedly and flames start breaking out everywhere. They are either under attack or they have collided with something and the repeated follow up hits point to the former.

I'll choose Garrus every time; he's Shepard's friend. Shep can trust him to do the right thing; be it for the benefit of the mission or the benefit of the crew. Your friends back your plays, plain and simple. I'd take Wrex over Garrus personally, but either of them I think you could trust to do the right thing when the chips were down. Or send everyone out in a blaze of glory... either way, it'll be memorable

As capable as Miranda might be, the minute she started running around telling folk she was my second officer... well, that was her relegated to fetching coffee and filing reports. Second-guess your CO, will you? That's your seapay frozen right there - just for spite ;)

I would concede to your point if I was a reasonable adult, luckily for me I'm not :P
So my counterpoint is that she had an unfair advantage since she had a Shepard in the neighborhood, once Garrus had a Shepard in his neighborhood he was fine to.

Edit added following line: The world would be a better place if we all had a Shepard in our neighborhood (there might also be an increased chance for gun fire and explosions) <_<

Garrus hands down, however whoever says that shepard putting out flames is retarded needs to ask themselves this - even if your an captain, and your on an boat in the middle of the ocean.... actually better example, A submarine. IS flames in any shape or form dangerous? hell yes. Damage control on keeping your air supply stable is pretty damn high on the list.

Secondly, Miranda is a poor choice in my opinion, The entire game I expected her to betray me in some fashion. Besides knowledge dictates that I would more than likely put Garrus in charge because of his past experience then anything else.

Ummm. u mean when she was waiting by the ship? after shep and jacob fought thru whole complex without her? yea i dunno. ain't buyin the whole "miranda got em out" thing. sorry.

and as for Garrus not taking care of himself. he had all the toughest gangs in galaxy trying to kill him for weeks holed up by himself and they couldnt stop him. can't take care of himself? how u think this stuff up?

In me1 its Kaidan
In ME2 it Garrus

I still don't trust Cerberus to lead anything I was still expecting Miranda to betray me....... I trust Garrus more than I trust Miranda.

Garrus, Garrus, Garrus. However, I don't hate Miranda and she'd probably be third in line.

In the first game it actually crossed into my mind that he could be an agent for hierachy or else. But I have my suspicions about everyone. (You have no idea what I went through with Kelly)

Nowadays I feel he's above every other character. Smart, loyal and passionate about it. From sheer respect I wouldn't choose anyone else. Though he feels a bit unstable from time to time but it all makes him even more human/likeable. Feels like an old friend, something very unusual for a vid game character.

Oh, and one of the few characters that actually behave like a trained soldier while having brains.

For my calculative, pr-minded (paragon conversation options, but few, but severe renegade actions, like killing the council, he can smooth-talk himself out of the worst situations) sentinel with mind dominate, I pick Miranda. She is smart, connected and ressourceful, but weak-willed and controllable. (Plus great genes for the romance, gotta have offspring for that future empire)

My forceful and aggressive socialist paragon would pick Samara, she matches his fight against social injustice and wrongs. (He is my me-ish character)

Then there is my **** Shepard, he is a loner and would probably not want a second in command. If he had to pick one, he would probably pick Zaeed or Jack, they are both crazy and won't ever question his renegade actions. Plus their shiftiness and the possibility of them betraying him excites him.

It will always be garrus. I wish it was tali and maybe even kasumi now that we got her DLC, but we will see.

For most of the game there's no need to have a squadmate be "second in command" ... I wouldn't even want anyone in that post:

-- Cereberus guys I don't trust much

-- Garrus has a bad habit of losing people & predicatably is revenge oriented when slighted ... too easy to take advantage of him

Jack. Because she's that awesome and besides, she hates Cerberus - exactly the type I need.

For tactical decisions: Garrus

For kicking ass: Samara.
