I have an ATI Radeon 4850 and noticed the threads discussing the "game crashes" etc. with the 38xx and 4890 cards.  My issue was different.  When I logged into the game, everything was constantly "flickering" (or artifacting) which made the game visually unplayable.

I tried many things to no avail: reduced the resolution, disabled all advanced video options (lowest quality, no AA, no Vsync, etc.), ran it in window mode, forced the hardware to control the 3d options, and a few other things I cannot remember.

I finally stumbled on a good work-around that has worked flawlessly for me for the past two days - probably 8-10 gaming hours.

1) Install the ATI driver of your choice (I am using 9.8 and have also done some limited but successful testing on 9.10)
2) Install the Catalyst Control Center (CCC) - available bundled or separately with the ATI drivers
3) Run DA:O in windowed mode (i.e. I run 1680x1050 fullscreen, so I chose the 1440 x 900)
4) Verify the flickering is still there
5) Start up CCC in advanced mode
6) Click on the ATI Overdrive menu option
7) Click the "Key" icon to unlock the overdrive options
8) Slide the "GPU Clock" to the lowest possible setting (for me, it was 500 MHz)
9) Slide the "Memory Clock" to the lowest possible setting (for me, it was 700 MHz)
10) Click the "Apply" button

The game instantly cleaned up for me - there was no more artifacting at all.  You can now easily experiment with higher settings.  I was not able to get stable "non-flickering" performance when I increased the GPU clock speed at all.  All told, the game runs very smoothly and for hours at a time without problems.  The only stuttering (or slow-down) I get is at the very beginning of a level/movie for maybe a second or two before it smooths out.

I now run the game at:
a) 1680 x 1050 Fullscreen
B) Very High graphic detail
c) 2x Anti-Aliasing
d) High Texture Detail
e) Vertical Sync
f) Frame-Buffer Effects

NOTE: With the 9.8 drivers, I was able to increase the Memory Clock to its default value (for me, 950 MHz).  With 9.10, I saw intermittent flickering until I pushed it back down to the minimum value.

NOTE 2: This is the only game I have this issue on; based on tests run on the video card, I am fairly confident this is not a hardware issue.  Truthfully, I hope to have a fix from either BioWare or ATI so I can bump AA to max!

Actually, the flickering and artificing you're getting is from the graphics card overheating. That is why it goes away when you effectively underclock the card, ie. making it work much slower than was intended. I'd recommend you make sure your graphicscard is getting adequate cooling and that your fans are actually working.

Not that we have the same situation however I had been playing Dragon Age for probably 8-10 hours with no problems. I recently had purchased an SSD drive and I found out that I should have been running a different setting for it in my BIOS so I changed it and ran an upgrade on my Windows 7 installation to completely fix my configuration problem.

In that process I had to run windows updates again (which included an ATI driver update) and I later installed 9.10 again because the Catalyst Control Center needed to be re-installed because of the upgrade process I went through.

In the end what I found was I started to play Dragon Age for about a half hour then during one of the talking scenes I started to have all kinds of artifacts and about 30 seconds later I had the video freeze.

My troubleshooting found that somewhere in my upgrade process the Catalyst Control Center set overdrive on by default. I had to actually switch to advanced mode and unlock the window and disable it. Now once again I'm problem free.

I believe that most peoples problems in this forum have to do with hardware problems whether it is overheating, memory timings, ect.

While running this game the video card is constantly near 80C so I would highly recommend that people check the ATI Overdrive and make sure it is disabled and their frequencies are set to default. There is no reason you should overclock if your temperature are this high and your using stock cooling like me.
