What I want is an animation where the character plants a staff in the
ground. Part of the "cs_male.zevran" animation would be
suitable. "c_dsogre.tal_stomp" would be even better, if only it was more
suited to ordinary humanoids.

Is there any way to assign only part of an animation (like in the cutscene editor) without having proper 3D animation skills? Or better, blend and combine animations (again, like in the cutscene editor)?

There's this; social.bioware.com/wiki/datoolset/index.php/Animation_blend_tree_editor
But I was never able to get it to work myself.

I know only how to work with animation blend trees, but i never figured out how to play only part of an animation.

I'll just have to try it and see what I can achieve. Thanks :)

Well, I've experimented a bit with it now. It seems to require creating a "blend group" in order to preview the blend tree (which I'm not entirely sure I completely understand anyway). However, once the blend group is created, pretty much all the useful menu options disappear from the context menus (right click) and are greyed out in the menu bar, and there seems to be no way to go back without creating a whole new animation worksheet. So you can preview it, but you better like it because there's no going back... In addition, the blend tree and animation streams have what appears to be a "play" button, all of which turn into what look to be stop buttons once you assign an animation to one of the streams. I failed to understand the significance of these; they don't appear to do anything when I click on them...

All in all, I hated it. Maybe I'm just missing something...

I know that the options of the right click contex menu are only 2 or 3 (and you do not need much more), what options are missing?.

After you have assigned an animation to the "animation stream" and you have chosen a creature to use for the preview, you can play the animation by right clicking on the "animation stream" and choose "play", do not consider the symbols.

For a better understanding, download the original animation worksheets from this project.

The ones that disappear were "Add Blend Tree" and "Add Animation Stream". I've had a look at a couple of the worksheets from that project now, but now I'm not sure I even understand what they're used for. Anyway, you were right about play. I was trying to click play from the curve and the frame timeline thing... I still don't really understand, though. Surely the purpose of a blend tree is to blend the streams together? None of them look like they were made for that...

It sound strange that after you create a new worksheet you can't see the "Add" options.

If you copy the blend trees of that project into a new worksheet (drag a box to select streams and trees), and you start to preview animations you will see that a blend tree, groups a variable number of animations. If you zoom in on blend trees nodes (the greyed colored ones), you can read a name. For example if you open the humanoid.acb file, you can find the blend tree called "combat_humanoid": if you take a look to the streams that are connected to it, you will notice that those streams refers to animations that an humanoid creature can perform during combat mode and that do not need some strict requirements (such as welding a two hand weapon, dual welding or long range weapons).
By examining these files i realized that a creature, in various situations (such as exploring, combat or beahviour) can perform only the animations grouped by the blend tree that refers to that particular situation.

However, as i said before, i couldn't find a way to play only part of an animation.

I can see the "Add" options at first, but not after creating a "blend group", whatever that does.

Your explanation does seem to shed some light, though it doesn't look like animation worksheets are going to be of use to me. I don't like giving up, but perhaps it is best if I just leave it all to the VFX. Proper animation would be nice, but this is not a major setback.

In fact, i haven't found a way to play only part of an animation.
