Hey everyone, sorry to bother you all with this but I just got this game a few days ago and I am totally stuck with what to do.

I have got to the part after where I got a new person called Ashley added to my group. I found some scientists hidden in a hut and then some guy hiding behind some crates and spoke to all them. Just after that there is this bridge or walkway type thing full of enemies shooting at me -  I just can't get past them. Everytime I go near I just get totally shot to death.

=]

So I guess I am doing something majorly wrong cause I already have it set to easy. I am shooting at the enemies but I don't seem to hit them much at all - is there a way to tell if I have hit them? I have tried to run past them already but I just die before I get anywhere. And I keep getting stuck on things like boxes and walls and then turn to face the other way - I don't know what thats about?

Is there a way I can switch so I dont zoom close when I shoot my gun, and have a curser instead, cause I think that zooming in thing is really confusing me.
Well any advice will be great. Thanks very much.

The game will put you into cover automatically, so you have to be careful where you run. If you get stuck to a wall that you don't want to be stuck to, move opposite it to get unstuck quickly.

The key to getting past those enemies is patience. Get behind a barrier, fire at the closest enemy. Duck back when the shields go down and wait for them to get back up. Once you have the first couple of enemies down, run to another barrier that's a bit closer to the next batch.

Is the Geth Destroyer there on easy level? He'll charge you, so you will want to concentrate on the big guy first.

Are you playing on the PC or 360? I played on the 360, so I can only help with zooming and such from that perspective.

What class are you, by the way? Soldier, Vanguard, Adept...?

Lilisia, also check which weapon you are using. As a soldier, you have access to all the guns but at that very early stage of the game, you sniper rifle and -- to lesser extent -- your assault rife are of such low quality that it is difficult to hit anyone with them. Luckily, your pistol and shotgun will work just fine, although you should know that your shotgun will be effective only at very close range (at least until you get a decent one later).

Also, remember to use your other squad members. Kaidan is a sentinel. He has powers that can rapidly debuff your enemies or build up defenses. And, of course, don't forget to pop a medi-gel whenever you need it.

edited because I screwed up Kaiden's class. Doh!

Also, on targeting with the pc, the game will zoom in a bit whenever you pull your gun but you don't get the really close zoom unless you press right-click (this brings up a targeting scope with the sniper rifle in use). In Mass Efffect, whether you hit enemies, and the damage you do, is a function of your targeting AND your skill level. Your skill level is pretty low at the beginning and, as i mentioned before, you're using lousy weapons. So you won't deal damage nearly as quickly at this point. This makes it really important for you to be patient and to direct your squad mates to take cover and use all the talents at their disposal. That battle you're in is the first difficult one in the game. It sort of forces you to learn some things about squad commands and tactics, in order to get past it.

I'm sure you'll nail it soon. Good luck!

Ah, a soldier. I played as a soldier once, but I hope I can still help you out. :P

Under the game options, do you have it set to automatically level up your squadmates? Just curious. If you're not entirely sure what all those skills do, probably safe to keep it to auto level up.

You have access to four different guns and as you level up, you will have the ability to improve your skill in each type of gun. The sniper rifle and the assault rifle will be incredibly difficult to use without having some skills put into them. If you use the assault rifle, don't hold down for continuous fire. Assault rifles work better if you tap tap tap in short bursts. Shotgun is best only if the enemy is up close. The pistol will be your best weapon of choice at least in the beginning.

As a soldier, your best ability is your indestructibleness. Heavily recommend getting Fitness. When you use the Fitness ability, you'll notice the enemies gunfire doesn't damage you very much.

Ashley is another soldier, so she will be used much in the same way you use yourself. I gave her the assault rifle because she's not useless with it even if you don't have the skill points for her yet.

Engineers are like rangers. Adepts are like mages. Kaidan has the abilities of both. His decryption skill will give him Sabotage. When used, it will momentarily stop the enemy from firing at you. His electronics skill will give you Overload. When used, it will damage an enemy and mess with their shields. Overload is almost always a good way to start a battle. His throw skill will push enemies away from you. Eventually after putting enough points into throw, he'll get lift which will pick them up off the ground.

Died again. :crying:

Thanks for the advice both of you. If adepts are like mages I think I will start again and make an adept and see if that works out better. I am not sure I am cut out to be a soldier.

Also I cant work out how to take control of the other characters in my group.

You must press the spacebar and hold it.
The game will pause.
Then you turn the screen and aim with the right mouse button. With the left mouse button you select powers/give orders.

Not being a fan of shooter games, I found an adept was a much better class for me to start.

As for controlling other characters, we'll have to get a PC gamer to tell you how you access your squadmates' abilities. You can tell them what powers to use or somewhat direct them around the battlefield. You can't control them directly. As for direction, I never bothered because it was a little glitchy. However, I did tell them when and how to use their powers very often. Check the game options to see if you have them set for active or defensive power use. If active, they'll automatically go through their entire arsenal without you having to tell them, though you have some control of it. If defensive, you'll have to tell them when and where all the time.

With an Adept, the only weapon you need to worry about is your pistol, even though you'll see that your character has all four. Just stick to the pistol.

As for what an Adept can do:
1. Throw - Toss enemies back. If the enemies are bunched together, it will toss them all back. Sometimes that can kill them, but sometimes they enemies will get back up and resume the attack. More points in throw will give it a stronger punch.
2. Lift - After spending some skill points in Throw, you'll get Lift. Lifts an enemy into the air. Again, if the enemies are bunched up, it can lift multiples. A good combination is to Lift then Throw.
3. Warp - It's like your firebolt. Offensive attack.
4. Singularity - After putting points into Warp, you'll get this power which can send multiple enemies into a vortex. They'll take damage if they hit something, but mostly it makes them helpless while you gun them down.
5. Barrier - You'll have minimal armor, so Barrier will help absorb damage.
6. Stasis - Freezes an enemy. You can't damage them while frozen (not initially), but it gets them out of your way while you concentrate on killing another enemy.

Starting out in the game, getting to the point that's giving you trouble, I think you'll only have Throw, Warp, and Barrier available to you. You'll still have to rely on your pistol.

I suggest seeking cover and  having  your squad mates fire or use there abilites while you take out the rest of the geth ( i believe its geth on that level)

also depend's what class you are if you're in a solider class then your more then likely going to gun them down.

As for any other class eg. Adept you only get training in pistols & it  doesn't allow you to aim in on them with assault rifles and sniper rilfes.

Hope this helps (as it helped me to use my squad):wizard:

If you want, I'll record a brief video of a class showing you how to do that part and load it on youtube. Let me know if you could use that.

Ok I restarted as an adept. I think I'm getting the idea a bit better now, I got past that walkway and I got to area where I have to find the bombs now. Although I did get blowed up. But... progress :D

Thanks everyone for all the advice, its been a big help!

Oh I might know what the problem was. On this walkway is a Geth destroyer (the ones that charge at you) which does not take damage by weapons. There is a small message that you must use the power "throw" on him to move along. When you play soldier you have to rely on Kaidan, you can not kill it by yourself.
I remember that this thing killed my twice before I followed the instruction.
I think that they made the destroyer immune to weapons as part of a "tutorial" so that you are forced to use (in order to learn it) a power (here the throw-power).

Kaidan has it from the start. You have it also as Adept and Sentinel.

Your first playthrough tends to be like this. I don't have much else to say, as pretty much everything has been stated already, but I'd recommend you bookmark this link and give it a visit when you can:

Also, I'm afraid playing as an Adept your first run would probably make this even harder, but it ultimately depends on your playing preference. Generally speaking, Soldier is a great class to start out with.

Ok so I finally found all the bombs and switched them off but now I cant seem to find where to go next.

I have been down some stairs and found some other crates and things but no path away from there. There is another train platform thingy but i cant work out how to summon the next train.

Why is this game so hard? Thanks in advance for any help.

The hallway where you find the three bombs, at the bomb at the far end of that hallway, turn left. Down stairs. You should have a couple geth and husks to fight. The beacon is there.

Then you'll have a nice long period on the Citadel, so hopefully the game will get easier for you.

You need to activate the Prothean beacon (the same Saren used in the earlier cutscene).

Lisilia, the site I linked in my previous has a detailed walkthrough. If you feel things are starting to push harder, I highly recommend that you just follow the walkthrough. Also, make sure you check your Journal every now and then, just so you don't get lost.

Good luck. Believe me, it's a great game. Your first playthrough just tends to be confusing.

I played a little more today and got to the citadel and got another new person for my group. I like the talky parts of the game much better than the shooty parts, and also just exploring around.

Just wanted to say thanks again to everyone for all the help so far! :)
